CES Trends - Get ready for your TV to disappear

Not a direct hit, but close.

He's focused on the big models and a lot of them that will set you back a lot of bucks. And One is available from Celluon that can fit in your pocket for under $500.

Hisense can get you up to 140 inches for $13,000?

But while TV screens are getting thinner and thinner, some companies are working on screen-free futures altogether. Sony showed off a really impressive 4K laser projector dubbed the VPL-VZ1000ES that made you forget that you are not looking at a TV — and unlike the old man-cave projector that needed to be mounted across the room, this new generation of projectors is short-throw, which means it can be placed inches away from the projection target. Sadly, your bank account will know the difference between this and a regular TV right away: The VPL-VZ1000ES will cost $25,000.

Hisense is making a slightly more affordable laser projector that is going to retail for $13,000, and the company said that the device will eventually be able to power screens of up to 140 inches. Hisense also showed off the next generation of laser projectors with two color wheels, hinting at a glorious future where the best picture quality won’t require a display at all.

Visited Celluon to See the PicoBit... Here it is

I visited Celluon yesterday. The PicoBit is awesome. Have pictures and comments. (and not a lot of time.)

This is the first of many similar devices, and they're only going to get better.

*** Shipping date is today, but I was told they're being shipped directly from Korea.

The PicoBit is much brighter. In a dark room it's not so apparent, (at least to me. perception is a funny thing.)  but in a brightly lit room, the difference I noticed is significant.

This is the PicoBit working in a room that is well lit with florescent office lights. In similar circumstances with the PicoPro you would probably end up looking at your phone.

It's VERY convenient for apps or movies to have the integrated unit. The big advantage is that the difficulty of connecting the unit to the phone (and the time it takes) is gone.

Below is the Application screen. The top of the PicoBit is all a touch pad.  (Move the cursor with one finger, tap to click, drag things with two fingers, etc.)

The Android system in this was faster than the tablet they were using, and all the apps available on the PlayStore will work.

That's the picture from the PicoBit on the left, and the PicoPro on the right. To my eye, there was not a lot of difference between the pictures (in the dark. much different in the light, and as you can see in the side by side pictures, the camera isn't lying. The picture in the dark for the PicoPro is fantastic.)

To the camera however (from my Sony phone) the pictures were actually showing a flare from the extra brightness of the PicoBit. (We also had open blinds on the left for a bit, which was skewing the pictures.)

Another sample showing the Flare. It does the PicoBit side an injustice, because the camera adjusted for the dark side of the frame, not the bright side of the frame -- which is how we usually want things.  To my eye, there wasn't a lot of difference between the pictures when in the dark -- the camera clearly could tell the difference.

Many want to stream from Apple devices. There is an Application there called AirPico which allows streaming from Apple devices -- it's not a true Apple Application, so streaming from Apple's own Applications doesn't work. Streaming from YouTube works fine, and as recent positive news about downloading content from Netflix works, there's a memory card slot on the PicoBit, so, you can keep a lot of content with you.

Look at the second Icon from the left on the top row..

There is a fan opening on the bottom of the PicoBit. It is not as large as they showed on one of the pre-production units.

The unit did get warm after 45 minutes of use, but not uncomfortably so, and we weren't worried about battery life for the time that we were using it either. There's a tripod mount on the bottom.

I could only hear the fan when I held it right up to my ear. Its very quiet.

The speakers on the unit, on the other hand were quite good. They have the same speakers as the PicoPro, but they must be putting more power to them. Loud enough to share your watching with others and not miss the show.

PicoBit up on Celluon's Website

I think this is the product that takes us to the next level (unless the release of something else is bigger and imminent.)

Stand-alone projectors are great, but it takes a minute or so to connect the projector to a phone and make everything go. (And I've found that in Wifi "noisy" areas, establishing and retaining the connection can be difficult. -- like in a phone store.)

With a device that has its own operating system, focus free, with no connection issues and essentially an "instant-on" condition -- a lot of difficulties are answered.

THIS device -- with only Netflix loaded on it -- is your portable big-screen TV.  It hasn't been noticed by very many people yet, but it will be.

Stand alone was proof of concept, this is where things get really interesting.

New Products from Celluon at IFA - Check Reddit

Got Multiple alerts from some readers today about a post on the MicroVision forum from Reddit. I appreciate the heads up -- I'll be checking with Celluon's office outside Seattle to see if I can get up close and personal with this stuff this week.

Haven't had time to post earlier this week. Visited Celluon @ IFA on Monday. I was really impressed by the PicoBit. They had several of them for exhibition.
They told me it is 50lm and is actually perceived 2 times as bright as the picoPro. The PicoPro was on the left for comparison and I can confirm it. Even though the ambient light conditions were quite bright, one could easily watch the saturated picture of the PicoBit. I found it very high quality.
Another nice thing is, that you now have an sd-card slot, as well as that you can connect with an iphone wirelessly, although they told me that you will just be able to show own content like pictures and so on, not yet downloaded content (and maybe also not streamed content).
The touchpad is a nice working feature allowing you to select pictures videos or anything else currently at display. Although I didn't find it as smooth as my iphone touch screen. But the reason for it might have been also my sticky a little bit wetted fingers.
There were even other projector devices presented, but unfortunately I didn't take enough time to try them out as well. I was told that the PicoBit will start selling at the end of September. At first from Celluon Website and later from Amazon. I was glad to hear that the PicoBit will be also available in Europe through Amazon.
I am very looking forward to buy several PicoBits at the end of month :-)
