Sony’s New Pico Mobile Projector Is Big On Image Quality And Viewing Experience

Projector Central

Everyone's tolerance for image quality varies, but our rough estimations of image diagonal for satisfactory image brightness, contrast, and black level are as follows:
Darkened room - 96"
Dimly lit room - 48"
Indirect sunlit room - 36"
Direct sunlit room - 24"

Celluon's PicoAir projector is incredibly tiny. At 7 ounces and with a very thin profile, it can be easily slipped into a shirt pocket or tossed into your gadget bag. We showed it to various people while asking them to guess what the device was and nobody guessed that this was a full-featured pico projector. It is very easy to confuse this with a sleek smartphone charger or external battery.

Once connected wirelessly though and in a completely darkened room, the PicoAir really does feel like magic. Picture quality is reasonably bright and watching slideshows as well as streaming videos from YouTube (in HD no less) was quite a treat. The ultra quiet, fan-free operation makes you forget that you are using a projector and the ability to quickly project and mirror images on you device is so convenient.

I am an avid Slingbox user and the combination of the Celluon PicoAir, the Slingplayer app and my LG G4 smartphone makes it dead easy to watch TV shows and sports events from back home anywhere I am. The PicoAir's 2.5 hour battery life is generous for such a tiny device and the fact that it takes a microUSB connector means I can simply plug it into my monster Mophie power pack and project away.

With the sheer amount of content and entertainment that most mobile devices can carry, Pico projectors are the ideal companions for enjoying this content on a larger scale and on-the-go.

Cellulon's PicoAir projector is incredibly tiny. At 7 ounces and with a very thin profile, it can be easily slipped into a shirt pocket or tossed into your gadget bag. We showed it to various people while asking them to guess what the device was and nobody guessed that this was a full-featured pico projector.

Celluon Pico Pro

Better off with Celluon

"..is the successor to the ZTE-built Sprint LivePro, with a change in carriers. It does a decent job as a projector and is very capable as hotspot, most users, though, will be better off getting either a small projector such as the Celluon PicoPro$349.00 at Amazon along with a hotspot like the AT&T Unite Pro $0.01 at AT&T."

I think this guy was disappointed it needed a cable for Apple products.

"One advantage of the laser is that it eliminates the need to focus. Just point the projector at whatever you're using for a screen at any distance. You also get notably uniform brightness from edge to edge across the screen, which is not typically the case with pico projectors that use an LED light source."

I had the opportunity to try PicoPro ($379.99). Celluon loaned me the pint-sized projector, along with the necessary cables to connect to an iPhone. The projector is as thin as an iPhone in a rugged case, maybe thinner, and could easily fit in a jacket pocket, which makes the PicoPro an ideal projector for road warriors.
For starters, I liked how large the projected screen was able to go. It filled my bedroom wall just as well as my traditional bulb-based Epson projector does. Unlike the Epson, the PicoPro was always in focus despite its tiny size. I also liked how quiet it was, which is important because, frankly, the built-in speaker isn't that loud. Fortunately, there is an audio-out jack so you could route the audio to a powerful external speaker.
The PicoPro can run off the built-in rechargeable battery or via the included microUSB wired power adapter. What really impressed me was the wireless option, which is only for Android unfortunately. However, you could plug in an Apple TV with the right compact HDMI adapter, and achieve a similar wireless capability for iOS devices thanks to AirPlay.
PicoPro
The PicoPro is bright, but not as bright as traditional projectors in same price range. If you have a dark room, and a nice white wall or projector screen, you should be fine. The PicoPro comes with a clever holder and base, but there is no tripod mount.

Pros

  • Large projection screen, always in focus
  • Tiny size
  • Quiet operation
  • Battery or wired power source
  • Wireless option for Android

Cons

  • Wireless option for Android only
  • Not as bright as traditional projectors in same price range
  • Speaker not very loud
  • No tripod mount

Final Verdict

If you are looking for a projector, especially for traveling, the PicoPro from Celluon is worth considering. It barely takes up space in your gadget bag but can project your videos and presentations to a large crowd. Just make sure you have the right cables with you.

"Regardless of its limitations, the PicoPro is a marvel of modern technology. If you had told me 10 years ago that I’d have a projector I could carry in my pocket, and required no external power supply or wires, I would have thought it was pretty far-fetched."

"So it’s a big surprise that Celluon’s new featherweight pocket-size PicoPro is a heavyweight champ. I was prepared for it to suck — but was surprised and delighted when it turned my living room wall into a 150-inch cinema screen."

I have to admit that I’m far more impressed than I thought I’d be. PicoPro ($349) packs a high-definition video projector, a battery pack, and wireless capabilities into a 0.55″ thick enclosure with the same footprint as an iPhone 6 Plus. Overall, it’s the best small projector I’ve tested: much easier to use, quiet, and capable of delivering a better complete viewing experience."

"Up to this point, I haven't been impressed with any of the pico projectors I've seen. However, that has changed with the Celluon PicoPro. The image quality and brightness out of this tiny box is stellar, and to think that it does it all without making a sound or getting hot. " -- tuaw

"I have to say that the Celluon PicoPro projector has greatly surpassed all of my expectations. I went in thinking that it would be a cool little portable projector to tag along with my gear. You know, for fun. I wasn’t anticipating a powerhouse coming from the size of a smartphone (roughly). It’s bright, it’s sharp, it’s silent, and you can enjoy a full movie (and then some) before having to recharge." -- technologytell
