Vuzix Alexa powered AR Glasses

ROCHESTER, N.Y.Jan. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Vuzix® Corporation -- Vuzix® Corporation (VUZI), ("Vuzix" or, the "Company"), a leading supplier of Smart Glasses and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies for the consumer and enterprise markets, is pleased to announce that the Company will showcase its next-generation wearable technology smart glasses and augmented reality products at CES 2018, including the Vuzix Blade™, which was awarded four International CES Innovation 2018 awards.

Vuzix to unveil first Alexa-enabled smart glasses next week — and the company's stock is popping

  • The $1,000 glasses are aimed at a "prosumer" market, such as golfers or business customers, the company said, but will eventually come down in price and incorporate new features.
  • Vuzix has a long-standing presence as a wearables maker in the enterprise technology market but is now looking toward consumers.
  • Vuzix's is one of many augmented-reality products expected out of CES, a consumer electronics trade show taking place in Las Vegas next week.

From Vuzix 10K

We currently purchase almost all of the microdisplays used in our products from Kopin and Microvision. Our relationship with these microdisplay suppliers is generally on a purchase order basis and neither firm has a contractual obligation to provide adequate supply or acceptable pricing to us on a long-term basis. We procure a small percentage of our microdisplays from other sources such as Syndiant and Texas Instruments. While we do not manufacture our components, we own the tooling that is used to make our custom components with the exception of certain authentication chips and connectors that may be required to support industry standard device connectivity. We believe that we are not dependent on our relationships with any supplier other than Kopin or Microvision. Kopin before we sold the defense divisions had also been a significant customer of our night vision display electronics modules and owns just under 3% of our common stock. Some of our accessory products are sourced from third parties as finished goods. We typically have them print our Vuzix brand name on these products of they are co-branded. Such third party products represented less than 5% of our sales in 2015.

Coca Cola testing the use of AR

Coca Cola testing Augmented Reality for Maintenance.

When a good idea comes along, people will find it and use it..

This is going to be HUGE.

CocaCola.com

Michael Terrell was playing an augmented reality (AR) video game with his son when he got an idea.

“I started thinking, ‘Surely we can use this technology in our bottling plants’,” said Terrell, director of operational excellence for Coca-Cola Refreshments.

Unlike virtual reality (VR), which replaces the real world with computer-simulated environments, AR overlays data on top of the real world via software-enabled smartglasses. Terrell, who is responsible for using emerging technologies to reduce costs, improve quality control and drive efficiencies throughout the Coca-Cola supply chain, saw the opportunity for technicians to use AR to access maintenance and service information within their line of sight, while keeping their hands free.

Reconfiguring bottling equipment for different packaging options – for example, switching a production run from 150-ml cans to 8-oz. glass bottles – is a complex process known as a changeover. Terrell and his team are using AR to minimize downtime during changeovers, boosting overall output. Technicians onboard cruise ships also are testing AR to remotely service Coca-Cola Freestyle fountain dispensers when issues arise at sea.

MicroVision WAY ahead of the competition

So, check this out. A load of companies say they're going to try to do something that's on the cutting edge -- equip their employees with smart glasses.

Why companies are RUSHING to fit their employees with smart glasses.

"In a recent survey conducted by Herndon, Va.-based APX Labs—who collected responses from 201 U.S.-based companies in various industries—60 percent of participants who don't currently use smart glasses were open to adopting it in the near future while 51 percent said they have plans for using smart glasses in the upcoming year."

"The smart glasses data represented a faster projected growth rate than any other “smart” wearable tech device mentioned in the report, including growth rates related to smart watches, activity/fitness trackers, indoor location sensors/beacons and wearable mobile cameras."

"In terms of industries where smart glasses will become prevalent, APX Labs CEO/founder Brian Ballard said that he believes manufacturing, field service, maintenance and repair, material handling and logistics, and inspection/quality control will be key. “These are important jobs, with lots of people and where improving performance in terms of process speed, employee productivity, production quality and compliance/safety has giant impacts on the bottom line,” he added."

Now, you may be thinking "What does this have to do with MicroVision?" Check this out. Not only is MicroVision a leader in IP in this space, but they've ALREADY DONE IT.

Their display is improved, and the software is improved, and they've already been
there. Listen to these guys laugh at what's 10 years ahead of its time. Listen to the guy in the blue shirt.

The technology (the supporting software, tracking, and even the display, has caught up with sentiment.)

Now that MicroVision has PicoP well in hand and ready to generate cash for the company through its partners (SONY & others), they can begin re-engaging with this market that is clearly now ready for what they have to offer.
