Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies will open a Bellevue office in March that will eventually grow to 100 employees, the company confirmed Wednesday.

The research and development office will be staffed by up to about 100 people “sometime in 2017,” said company spokesman William Plummer.

Huawei’s lease is said to be about 11,000 square feet on the fifth floor of the Plaza Center in downtown Bellevue, according to Grant Yerke, a senior vice president at Broderick Group, a Bellevue real-estate company.

Yerke noted that the space is not large enough for 100 people, but the company may have an option to expand.

Plummer said he couldn’t share further details now about the future office or the company’s current presence in the region. He could not immediately confirm the location of the Bellevue office.

Huawei follows Salesforce into the Bellevue market, where Yerke said a “broad spectrum” of business tenants, not just tech companies, are searching for space.

Plans for the new Huawei office were first reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal.

Huawei, based in Shenzhen, China, has emerged as one of the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers and is also a force in telecommunications equipment.

The company lists a Bellevue and a Kirkland office on its website, and more than 40 people in the Greater Seattle area have LinkedIn profiles that say they work at Huawei.

LinkedIn job postings show Huawei has 39 open positions in Bellevue.

Many Amazon watchers struggle to explain just why the online retailer and cloud services provider is in the risky business of making hardware in the first place. That’s the wrong question to ask. Lab126 is in the business of asking: Why the heck not? Fueled by his pride in Amazon’s inventiveness and his stubborn refusal to cede even an inch of the tech landscape to other companies, Bezos provides much of the motivation at Lab126, pushing it to develop mainstream hardware devices, as well as a variety of so-called “science projects,” many of which have yet to see the light of day.
One group at Lab126, for example, is working on a device that projects a computer image onto any surface. A second is developing a wireless speaker that responds to voice commands. Apparently there are many more. Lab 126 insiders whisper about a credit-card reading device similar to Square, which could help propel Amazon’s fledgling payments business, plus a remarkably thin upcoming version of the Kindle Paperwhite, code-named Ice Wine.

Amazon Hardware moves bode well for PicoP

A company willing to try a new device with a 3D screen will be willing to try PicoP. The Amazon Kindle Fire prototype with the embedded PicoP was conspicuously absent from the recent Microvision stockholders' meeting.

Which letter of the alphabet is a question we're eager to have answered.

"Amazon.com Inc. is expanding beyond its range of Kindle devices as it aims to compete more directly with Google Inc. and Apple Inc.
The Seattle e-commerce giant has recently been developing a wide-ranging lineup of gadgets—including two smartphones and an audio-only streaming device—to expand its reach beyond its Kindle Fire line of tablet computers, said people familiar with the company's plans."
"One of the devices is a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for three-dimensional images without glasses, these people said. Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, they said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes, two of the people said."
"Some elements of Amazon's hardware push have previously become public. Last year, news surfaced about Amazon developing one smartphone. And last month, The Wall Street Journal and other media outlets reported that Amazon also was developing a set-top boxfor streaming movies and TV shows.
But the people familiar with the plans said the smartphone and set-top box are just two elements of a broader foray into hardware that also includes the audiostreaming device and the high-end smartphone with the 3-D screen. Inside Amazon's Lab126 facility in Cupertino, Calif., where each of the devices have been under development, the efforts are known as Project A, B, C and D, or collectively the Alphabet Projects, said the people familiar with the plans.
Though Amazon has goals of releasing some of these devices in the coming months, these people cautioned that some or all of the devices could be shelved because of performance, financial or other concerns."

Here’s how iOS 8 turns your iPhone into an iPad gamepad

Apple has detailed how its iOS 8 Controller Forwarding will work, turning an iPhone with a gamepad accessory into a wireless remote for iPad and Mac games. The new feature, which builds on iOS' existing support for third-party gaming controllers, is one of a number of tweaks and improvements to the Game Controller framework, revealed at WWDC 2014 this week.
As it stands, Apple supports three types of gamepad with iOS. The standard has the usual D-pad, four button cluster, and two shoulder buttons; an extended version adds analog sticks and extra buttons. Finally, there's a standalone controller, which has the same control features but which connects wirelessly rather than seeing the iPhone dock into it.
With iOS 8, however, the iPhone will be able to connect over Bluetooth or WiFi to a nearby iPad or Mac and act as a controller for a game running on them.
The two devices need to be signed into the same iCloud account for the system to work; assuming that's the case, a D-pad symbol will appear on the iPhone's lockscreen when it's fitted into a gamepad accessory, and swiping it up will automatically start the connection.
For developers, Apple said, there's no extra work to be done in adding the support to their games. As long as they've added the correct controller support code, the iPhone will simply be recognized as a standard wireless controller.
In addition to button-presses, the connection also passes on movement data. The iPhone's accelerometer and gyroscope feed gravity (in Gs), user acceleration, attitude, and rotation rate to the iPad and Mac game, as part of a new "Motion" profile developers can access.

Six years ago, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) decided that they had a new dream. The agency wanted a system that would overlay digital tactical information right over the top of the physical world.
So, they created a program called Urban Leader Tactical Response, Awareness and Visualization (ULTRA-Vis) to develop a novel and sophisticated augmented reality system for use by soldiers.
Through half a decade and with the help of several military contractors, they succeeded. "To enable this capability, the program developed and integrated a light-weight, low-power holographic see-through display with a vision-enabled position and orientation tracking system," DARPA says:
Using the ULTRA-Vis system, a Soldier can visualize the location of other forces, vehicles, hazards and aircraft in the local environment even when these are not visible to the Soldier. In addition, the system can be used to communicate to the Soldier a variety of tactically significant (local) information including imagery, navigation routes, and alerts.

It comprises a pair of contact lens which refocus polarized light to the pupil and allows the wearer to focus on an image that is as near as 1.25 cm to the eye, thus enabling displays to be built into normal-looking glasses without the bulky optics.[50] In April 2012, the company signed a contract to deliver a fully functioning prototype to the Pentagon’s research laboratory,DARPA.[51] At CES 2013, the company demonstrated a prototype of its eyewear display that features a field of view of 60 degrees or more. It also claimed that a field of view of nearly 120 degrees is already in the works.[52] The first version of Innovega's glasses are designed for military use, but it's planning a consumer version by 2014 or 2015.[53]

Amazon - Burning the page

A new book by Jason Merkoski, a former Amazon manager who was an early leader of the company’s Kindle team, tells the inside story of the company’s efforts to reinvent reading, and looks ahead to envision how the future of digital books could unfold.
One of his predictions: the devices that we use to consume books will get smaller, cheaper, and work nothing like they do today.

Merkoski’s book, Burning the Page, includes a chapter that sketches out his vision for a small, inexpensive Pico projector — an “Amazon Microbook,” he calls it — that would display the contents of a book on any surface, such as the bedroom ceiling at night. Readers could even project the content onto the pages of a blank physical book.
Merkoski, who left Amazon in 2010, is careful to note that he’s not aware of any plans by Amazon or anyone else to build such a device, but the concept is in line with Amazon’s push to significantly reduce the price of hardware over time.
“This sort of device could socialize reading by making a book available to you and a close circle of friends,” he writes. “I can see this being used in reading groups, university study groups, or of course, in the privacy of your own bedroom. The biggest benefit of this type of device is its cost. Shrink the surface area of a device down to nothing, and you’ve made a cheap, hands-free reading device.”
Published by Sourcebooks, Merkoski’s book was released today in digital form, including a Kindle version, with a print version expected in August.

SixthSense: Changing the way we interact (and shop)

We've evolved over millions of years to sense the world around us. When we encounter something, someone or some place, we use our five natural senses to perceive information about it; that information helps us make decisions and chose the right actions to take.

But arguably the most useful information that can help us make the right decision is not naturally perceivable with our five senses, namely the data, information and knowledge that mankind has accumulated about everything and which is increasingly all available online. 

Although the miniaturization of computing devices allows us to carry computers in our pockets, keeping us continually connected to the digital world, there is no link between our digital devices and our interactions with the physical world. Information is confined traditionally on paper or digitally on a screen. 

SixthSense, an interface developed by the Indian computer scientist and inventor Pranav Mistry (33, Vice President of Research at Samsung) bridges this gap, bringing intangible, digital information out into the tangible world, and allowing us to interact with this information via natural hand gestures. SixthSense frees information from its confines by seamlessly integrating it with reality, and thus making the entire world your computer.


Above and below: SixthSense is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.

The SixthSense prototype is comprised of a pocket projector, a mirror and a camera. The hardware components are coupled in a pendant like mobile wearable device. Both the projector and the camera are connected to the mobile computing device in the user’s pocket.

The projector projects visual information enabling surfaces, walls and physical objects around us to be used as interfaces; while the camera recognizes and tracks user's hand gestures and physical objects using computer-vision based techniques.



Some practical uses of the SixthSense interface
The SixthSense prototype implements several applications that demonstrate the usefulness, viability and flexibility of the system.

The map application lets the user navigate a map displayed on a nearby surface using hand gestures, similar to gestures supported by Multi-Touch based systems, letting the user zoom in, zoom out or pan using intuitive hand movements.

The drawing application lets the user draw on any surface by tracking the fingertip movements of the user’s index finger. SixthSense also recognizes user’s freehand gestures (postures). For example, the SixthSense system implements a gestural camera that takes photos of the scene the user is looking at by detecting the 'framing' gesture. The user can stop by any surface or wall and flick through the photos he/she has taken.



Through the telephony application, SixthSense projects a telephone keyboard on any surface (including the user's hand, for example), allowing to dial numbers and make calls (in this case the user is provided with headset and microphone).

Shopping with SixthSense
All the advanced interactions with the purchaser, as QR codes or downloadable coupons via mobile phone, web sites or touch screens, seem already outdated if we look at what SixthSense can do!

All you have to do is to pick an item from the shelf and to 'frame' it. SixthSense projects on the item itself additional information such as: sustainability of the production process, the opinions expressed by other users,recommendations for use and a lot more! All this by simply taking the object in your hand, as you would commonly, without having to fiddle with other devices.

People are watching more internet TV, just not on their TVs





More people are watching TV over the internet, but they’re not using their TVs to do it. Here are the BBC’s latest data on usage of its streaming video service iPlayer, by type of device:

All of the growth over the past year is among people watching shows on their tablets. Nearly half of the BBC’s 234 million video streams last month were on tablets and phones. Computer use, meanwhile, has declined to below a third.

But most striking is that the share of iPlayer usage on television sets—through smart TVs, gaming consoles, and streaming media boxes—hasn’t increased at all. It remains the smallest category of device:

  1. Tablets and phones (46%)
  2. Computers (30%)
  3. Television sets (23%)
The data suggest a divide between live (also known as linear) television and on-demand viewing: people in the UK still watch plenty of live television the old-fashioned way, on the biggest screens in their living rooms. But for catching up on episodes of Top Gear that have already aired, they prefer smaller devices closer at hand. BBC iPlayer can be used for live viewing, but 88% of its video streams last month were for on-demand programming.

Watching TV over the internet also ends up pushing back primetime, when viewing is at its peak, from 9 o’clock in the evening to 10 o’clock. (Note that the scales for each line in this chart are not equivalent because live viewing of the BBC still far exceeds BBC iPlayer.) On-demand goes later into the night.

Claims



1. A light source apparatus, comprising: a light source; and a conductor to conduct heat diffused from the light source to a spreader to spread heat, the conductor having a plurality of parts. 

2. The light source apparatus according to claim 1, wherein: the conductor includes a first part to conduct heat diffused from a back surface of the light source when a light emitted side of the light source is defined as a front surface; and a second part to conduct heat diffused from a lateral surface of the light source. 

3. The light source apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the second part is sandwiched between the first part and a third part. 

4. The light source apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the first part is made of a material different from the second part. 

5. The light source apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the conductor includes a first part to directly conduct heat diffused from the light source, and a second part to indirectly conduct heat diffused from the light source, the second part being sandwiched between the first part and a third part. 

6. A projector apparatus, comprising: a light source apparatus, having: a light source; and a conductor to conduct heat diffused from the light source to a spreader to spread heat, the conductor having a plurality of parts.

Description



BACKGROUND 

[0001] The present technology relates to a light source apparatus and a projector apparatus. More particularly, the present technology relates to a light source apparatus and a projector apparatus capable of effectively dissipating heat generated. 

SUMMARY 

[0002] Projectors that project images or texts on screens become popular. Many of the projectors use high-intensity discharge lamps as light sources. In recent years, those using light-emitting diodes, laser diodes or the like have been developed. 

[0003] In the projectors, high light intensity is necessary for brighten. When the light intensity is increased, heat generated from the light source is also increased. Its countermeasure is necessary. For example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 2011-76781 suggests that a heat dissipating member is attached to the light source to counter the heat generated. 

[0004] Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 2011-76781 suggests that a heat sink having heat dissipation fins arranged at light sources is disposed via a heat transfer member to release heat generated from the light sources. 

[0005] In such a configuration, when a side where the light sources of the heat transfer member is defined as a front surface, heat is received at the front surface. As a result, flatness at a back surface is not easily provided and accuracy is difficult to be regulated. The heat from the light sources is transferred to other member disposed at the front surface of the light sources such as a lens, whereby properties may be degraded. 

[0006] In view of the above-mentioned circumstances, it is desirable to provide a configuration that can dissipate heat emitted from the light source. 

[0007] According to an embodiment of the present technology, a light source apparatus includes a light source, and a conductor to conduct heat diffused from the light source to a spreader to spread heat, the conductor having a plurality of parts. 

[0008] The conductor may include a first part to conduct heat diffused from a back surface of the light source when a light emitted side of the light source is defined as a front surface, and a second part to conduct heat diffused from a lateral surface of the light source.
