WHY Apple TV on Hold

Very interesting comments and insights in here.

Like many other articles about the topic, there is apparently no awareness of  the potential for a complete change of form factor.

Why Apple’s Next Generation TV Project is on Hold

 | Particle Debris
Sometimes a graph tells a story very nicely but it leaves it to our speculation as to the underlying cause and the implications for the future. Here's the chart: "There's A Reason It Seems Like Everyone Is Always Staring At Their Smartphones."
Credit:  Business Insider
To make my headline case, I need to backtrack and explore this graph with some context.
Off the cuff, this kind of share graph can be deceptive. People don't buy a new TV every year, but they're crazy about smartphones. A family may have one HDTV but a half dozen phones for home and work. TV ads can be annoying, and it requires a DVR to expunge them, sometimes without complete success—by their design. On the other hand, smartphone and tablet displays are smaller, but the kind of content consumed may be more pleasing in principle. So is it mobility that's key or the perhaps temporary inability to push bandwidth hogging ads over cellular? Customer toleration for a waste of their mobile dollars is low.
Given that, we can still move on and look at relative trends. The Print part of the graph is perfectly understandable and is a reflection of how a low-tech, under-funded industry can get into trouble quickly in this high tech era. The Radio part is also easy to understand because people can listen to their own music, a virtual radio station, with subscriptions on a smartphone. Finally, the Online graph is understandable in light of people moving away from complex desktops and towards tablets—which are more mobile but not always used in a mobile environment. For example, as second screens.
The takeaway from this graph is that there are seemingly unstoppable trends, and while we pay quite a bit of attention to the obvious trends in radio and print, the unstoppable trend on the TV industry side is often dismissed—along with cord-cutters.
Broadcast TV's Dirty Secret
The one thing I keep coming back to when I look at this chart is that no one really enjoys watching commercials when viewing conventional TV. There are now much better ways to communicate to customers. That's the most fundamental fact of our time, and yet the implications are always brushed under the rug in order to preserve the industry's cash flow.
The movement to mobile versions of movies and TV shows as well as Netflix and Amazon Primemeans that conventional Network TV shows will become more and more devalued. As a result, the networks will continue to haggle with carriers over carriage fees (and things like Dish's Ad Hopper). The whole thing is just going to break and break badly at some point because the video experience on mobile devices, especially phablets, is so much better. We don't need a DVR for our iPhone.  That sounds trite, but it's actually fundamental.
Given enough time, I believe the majority of TV viewers will generally abandon ad based network TV shows, and it's not because people love watching video on a 5-inch display. For additonal insight, see "TV IS OVER: Mobile Is Demoting TV To The Status Of Newspapers In Viewers And Ad Money.Like the iPodiTunes and music, when an industry starts to come apart at the seams, Appleloves to jump in and create a disruption. Despite the content holders' extensive contracts, deals, protections, multiple delivery modes and efforts to cover all the bases, the danger from Apple is always lurking.
Perhaps the delay in Apple's next generation TV project is because Apple is waiting for key signs that the Networks are helpless to stop what's happening to them. When it's too late for a comeback, Apple can be poised to bring to bear a new technology that the networks never had the savvy or technical expertise to develop themselves. Then, Apple could slam the door of opportunity shut for good.
Why go toe to toe when the opponent is already in self-destruct mode? Sometimes, as Sun Tzu said, lying in wait for the right moment can lead to victory.

Focused on Stock Price? You're Doing it Wrong.

If, at this point of this company's history you are terribly focused on the stock price, you're doing it wrong.

Sure, we're all here to make money on this company. We did however choose this company to make money on because it has fantastic disruptive technology. The demand for this technology could be staggering.

First: Owning the unknown. Volume & Stockholders
If you own Microvision now, you're owning an unknown company. If you've been doing due-diligence on it for a long time, you're surprised by the reaction to news. You wonder what it's going to take to move the stock price.

As I'm pretty sure that most of the dedicated holders of MVIS are fully invested, it's going to take word getting out about the company. A news release about a larger order from the Fortune 100 OEM (we know to be SONY) is not going to get word out about the company. It can make you feel a lot better about holding what you do though, because you know that they're going to do something. It worked, now they want more.

So, it's the day after news and the price is down what seems like a lot.  Less than 1/10th of 1% of the shares of the stock changed hands. Is the stock price meaningful? Does it changed what you invested in and why? I don't think so. It's not working that way for me. There are good reasons to own shares in this company, and it's not because of what the shares do on a day by day basis. They are the technology, enthusiasm for it, the market potential for it, and the brilliant business model for it.

Second: The technology and future enthusiasm
Check out the link below.

If you think the potential product looks cool you're not alone. (I'm sure this is part of some crowd funding scheme and I'm dubious even a prototype has been made, and I'm dubious it could work as shown.)

To me the interesting thing is the enthusiasm for it. 3.6 + Million views.

Check the comments, and you get two major themes: First "This is awesome" and Second "this is impossible"

If you're paying attention to Microvision, you know that better than this is not only possible but being manufactured now. -- and it's being manufactured by SONY (a company that makes the best video equipment on earth) and at least one more company.

Cicret Bracelet

BIGGER SCREENS -- Mobile Companies MUST use them -- and PicoP is the ultimate bigger screen  They will have to use Microvision

Third: Market Potential

Consumer electronic products can be delivered in STAGGERING quantities.

iPhone Sales (Forbes) Apple iPhone 6 --- 20 million phones in a month - goal of delivering 70-80 million iPhones between the launch in September and the end of the year!

First run of the Apple Watch? They're talking 10 million units.

Xaiomi plans to sell 100 million smartphones next ye
ar. (Tech in Asia)

All the devices that all these companies want to sell -- all want BIGGER SCREENS.

Fourth: License business model

The license business model is a great thing.

Increasing production costs Microvision little in additional capital outlays,

"The operating expenses are in a place where we expect to be able to ramp the business for a while with them. We're using contract manufacturers so as things ramp up, the investments that we have to make are not that large."

Microvision is virtually guaranteed a profit on each unit sold.

Don't own it for what the price does today... own it for what it will do soon.  Review the Conference call, we're very close. If you are holding, you are holding a still unknown company that is about to burst onto the scene with a significantly disruptive and very popular new device that will deliver information and entertainment to millions.

Confirmed it works and they want more.

MicroVision Receives Follow-On Component Order for Fortune Global 100 Customer

This $1.9 million order brings the total of component orders received to $3.8 million
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 2014-- MicroVision, Inc. (NASDAQ: MVIS), a leader in innovative ultra-miniature projection display technology, today announced it has received a $1.9 million purchase order for key components for a high definition display module being developed by its Fortune Global 100 customer.
This order follows previous orders announced in September of nearly $1.9 million. The value of component orders for this customer totals $3.8 million to date. The customer has informed MicroVision that it plans to incorporate the components from MicroVision in a high definition display module. The Fortune Global 100 company announced earlier this year that it aims to bring the display module to market for use in pico projectors and other devices with projector functionality. MicroVision is supporting the Fortune Global 100 on commercialization activities under a previously announced display module support services agreement.
Shipments of components from the orders announced in September are ongoing. MicroVision expects to fulfill this latest order in the first half of 2015. This order demonstrates MicroVision’s progress in bringing its patented scanned beam display technology to the consumer market under its “Image by PicoP®” licensing business model.
MicroVision’s PicoP® display technology provides a powerful display solution that projects high definition, focus free content from a tiny, low power display engine. MicroVision’s proprietary pico projection technology enables OEMs to deliver a high quality viewing experience to their customers by offering enhanced ways to view and share information. Whether for personal entertainment, social engagement, business collaboration, driver safety or in whatever way OEMs’ imaginations take them, PicoP display technology could be the exciting new element that consumers are searching for to elevate their mobile experience.

The company serves customers operating in the consumer, defense, industrial, and medical markets. MicroVision, Inc. was founded in 1993 and is headquartered in Redmond, Washington.
Advisors’ Opinion:
  • [By Charley Blaine]Shares of MicroVision Inc. (NASDAQ: MVIS) were jumping for a second day in a row Friday on the heels of Sony Inc.’s (NYSE: SNE) introduction of a new handheld projector that uses Microvision’s technology.
  • [By James E. Brumley]Did you miss the first big runup from Microvision, Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS) a couple of weeks ago? If you were regretting it then, it may have all worked out for the best. Though MVIS jumped from a close of $1.35 on the 19th to a peak of $3.38 on the 21st, it was also on the 21st that the weight of that big gain started to bear down. By the 25th, Microvision shares hit a low of $2.01, basically cutting in half the 150% gain that has been made in just a couple of days.
  • [By Bryan Murphy]If the cash you have available is money you absolutely need to invest safely and wisely because you need it (and its appreciation) to love on in retirement, then let me stop you right now – the rest of what you’re about to read probably isn’t for you. On the other hand, if you and your qualified financial adviser agree you’ve got some money you can gamble with [i.e. if you lose it all, it won't matter], then may I direct your attention to Microvision, Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS)? Long story made short, MVIS has dropped hints of a brewing rebound.

Sony PlayStation Experience - Saturday - Updated

Yes, those of us waiting for Microvision announcements or big news have been disappointed a number of times.

Disappointment only happens when you're really sure something is going to happen however. If we knew that PicoP couldn't be done, we wouldn't pay any attention or feel any disappointment. I'm never disappointed when I wake up to discover that I can't fly.

I'll call the odds for the coming weekend excellent. (Note the use of the word "odds" we have no guarantees!)

Sorry if you're reading this and want to have it beautifully arranged. No time for that today.

WATCH IT LIVE HERE

The Quick Summary:

The PlayStation Experience event is this weekend.
& We can expect a surprise
From GameSpot

Sony has a number of surprises to reveal at the show, including potentially an Overwatch-style surprise announcement.

Overwatch was Blizzard's big, surprise announcement at BlizzCon last month. It was notable because A) No one saw it coming and B) It was Blizzard's first new franchise in 17 years. Monacelli isn't so much promising a reveal of that caliber for PlayStation Experience, per se, only that he thinks what Sony does show might catch you off-guard just as Overwatch did.

Four things required to make a good mobile content delivery business: Content, Delivery Pipeline, Viewing platform & a market willing to pay for it.

  • SONY has been working very hard on CONTENT for MOBILE devices (and announcing it.)
  • They call it "PlayStation TV"
  • PlayStation TV is grouped with the PlayStation VITA -- their portable gaming device.
  • We are expecting a multi-year commercial agreement with SONY

CONTENT & Delivery

Seismic changes for Pay TV   <-- this is must reading from SONY

Content Partners

Cloud Based PlayStation Vue (live and on-demand TV without cable or satellite)

Don't forget that SONY has an enormous amount of content that it owns, creates and distributes.

"The company says the invite-only beta version of the streaming service will first be available on PS4 and PS3 in November, before rolling out to iPad, and later other "Sony and non-Sony devices." --- so it's being used somewhere NOW.

The content-purchasing and management system is already set up with the PlayStation Store. The PlayStation Store -- lots of Content -- including movies playing in theaters NOW.

Viewing Platform

PlayStation Vita TV

They have chosen the PlayStation Vue for the name of their television. Why?

If it were simply all for mobile devices, wouldn't a better, more inclusive name be more appropriate?

Gamers are notorious early adopters. If you want a bunch of customers to show off the new laser projector -- gamers are your crowd.

Gamers = early adopters

"
A quick search of early adopters’ online search histories reveals the “general” gaming keywords noted above in addition to keywords that indicate a heightened interest in new and developing technologies, such as 3D printing, Apple iWatch, Google Glass, Lytro camera, and iPhone 5S."

Get Adobe Flash player

Willing Audience
Check out the Microvision Twitter Feed it is nearly all about the consumption of mobile media, and how the consumption of mobile media is growing rapidly.

So, where do you put a new technology, when you want it rapidly adopted and generating a lot of buzz?

Additional clues? Sony expects its devices division (which also houses its image sensor business) and we would expect houses it's PicoP division -- to increase sales by 70%!

There's more that I don't have time to compile at the moment. I think the chances are good this weekend.

From Patently Mobile

This is cool, and it looks like great minds think alike. It looks like a step beyond the HP Sprout...

Which may explain the mysterious response to the State of Michigan caller during the last CC. I will urge you to listen to the conference call. (A summary here)   (Transcript here (Audio Here)

Sony's Patent Background

Remote teleconferencing provides a cost effective way to conduct communications with a person while viewing the person. However, as understood herein remote teleconferencing can feel unnatural when using a phone or tablet computer or even a TV, compared to an actual in-person dialog, since there is no feeling the other person is actually in the room.

Sony's Technology Extends to a Vehicle HUD System
Another aspect of Sony's invention relates to the projector technology for their video conferencing system may also apply to a "Heads-Up-Display" or HUD system for future vehicles.......

.....Without limitation, HUD displays that may be used include a solid state light source, for example a light emitting diode which is modulated by a liquid crystal display screen to display an image. Optical waveguides may be used in lieu of a projector, or a scanning laser can be used to display images on a clear transparent medium that establishes the display. Micro-display imaging techniques may also be used.

Google Glass Alive and Well

Peter Jungmann

There's a lot here to find interesting. A few snippets from the article have been pulled. If you are a long-term Microvision follower, you know that the company had a relationship with Motorola and has continued that relationship since it was purchased by Google.

Also, Google glass was mentioned during the stockholder meeting as "a fail in its current form." A significant part of that fail is the location of the display, it's limited field of view, and the fact that a user would have to refocus to look at the display. (I haven't used it so I can't speak from experience on that part of the matter.)

This article makes it clear that Google Glass isn't dead, but is still being quietly improved behind the scenes. Microvision will be an excellent choice to replace the display with a fuller field of vision.

I suspect the "commercial applications" they are talking about will come from the kind of applications featured in the video. With such applications possible I'm pretty sure the program will thrive.

From Patently Apple

Last week the U.S. Patent Office published a new Google Glass patent that was filed by their Motorola team that remains on board with Google.

If the user is authenticated then likely user location information is optionally utilized to further authenticate the user of the wearable device. For example, the authentication module implemented in the wearable device can optionally enhance the authentication of the user for some higher security applications by incorporating other information about the user, such as a location of the user, a route taken by the user, calendar information, and the like. If the current location of the wearable device (and user) is recognized as a likely location of the user, is a location along a likely route of the user, or is a location identified in a calendar appointment, then authentication may be further confirmed.

The last scenario definitely shows Google's is thinking of security issues in a work environment.

So in the end, Google Glass is alive and well. It's just gone underground in an attempt to reinvent itself with new technology and a focus on high-end commercial applications.

Sony PlayStation TV

From the Financial Times

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/e60b8d4a-773d-11e4-a082-00144feabdc0.html#ixzz3Kg6kzxku

PlayStation will receive a promotional boost from a two-day event in Las Vegas this weekend marking 20 years since Sony’s games console first went on sale.

This month will also see Sony begin small-scale testing of its new cloud-based television service, PlayStation Vue, which will eventually work with 35m PS3 and PS4 consoles in the US.

Sony has signed up American content partners including CBS, Fox, NBCUniversal and Viacom but is still in talks with holdouts including Time Warner and Walt Disney.

Mr Layden said that convincing traditional media companies to participate in what he described as a radical departure from previous internet TV efforts was a “long road”.

NOTE THE USE OF THE PAST TENSE

“There is no one of meaning that we are not talking to. Those conversations continue apace,” he said. “We know the cornerstone for live TV is news and sports, so we have to have the full complement of those channels.”

PlayStation Vue promises a personalised content selection and a new interface unlike any current US cable TV service. “No one has done what we are trying to do,” Mr Layden said.

For more about Sony Changing TV format, refer to their IR presentation (my summary here.)
