Nothing to Save the Smart phone market?

Thanks Joe

Then again, some of us know better than that.

Business Insider -- more at the source.

Others, like Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola, are forging ahead in the smartphone market, with bets that new technologies like high-speed 5G wireless internet and foldable screens will entice people to upgrade. Samsung alone is expected to ship this year a 5G-compatible version of the Samsung Galaxy S10, as well as the delayed Galaxy Fold foldable smartphone.

Companies including Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Samsung, Google-backed startup Magic Leap, and even "Fortnite" developer Epic Games all consider AR to be the next great computing interface. Microsoft and Magic Leap already have AR goggles on the market, with Apple said to be working on "smart glasses" that could be unveiled as soon as this year.
It's pretty clear that all of these companies are looking to AR as the next big gold rush in tech, following the slow stagnation of the smartphone industry.
They may be right — it's hard to imagine it not happening, given the sheer scale of the investment that every company is making in the market.

There were a couple of dots to connect after this new thing from Motley Fool

The pace of technology is even faster than he expected.

Masayoshi Son Fortune

For one, he has a 300-year view of SoftBank’s growth strategy. He says that artificial intelligence combined with data gathered by billions of sensors will bring on an “information revolution,” that will benefit people more than the 19th century Industrial Revolution.

Business Insider

In June 2010, the richest man in Japan revealed his latest vision for the next 30 years and the next 300 years.

Masayoshi Son, the chairman and CEO of tech behemoth SoftBank, shared his sci-fi predictions in a presentation at what was then SoftBank's 30th annual general meeting. We first saw the slide deck via Fortune.

Fast-forward seven years and Son has a tech fund close to $100 billion (£76 billion) at his disposal — thanks to companies like Appleand the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Saudi Arabia.

He's investing the money at a rapid pace into ideas that he hopes will turn his predictions — telepathy, superintelligent machines, computer-brain interfaces, and cloned sheep — into a reality.

The price of Pizza, May 22, 2010

This is a lesson in how a market can value something...

The market can under-value your something or over-value it.

Right now a company that is licensing and transitioning from a bleeding-edge company to leading edge company in four key emerging technologies is trading at $1.50/share. (or is that 1000 pizzas in 2022.)

There was risk with bitcoin in 2010. There's some risk with MicroVision now. But I bet you wish you'd put a few hundred bucks into bitcoin in 2010, and just hung on to it.

as of December 6, 2017...

On May 22, 2010, a developer bought two pizzas using 10,000 units of a then-little-known digital currency called bitcoin.

13450.00 * 10,000 = $134,500,000
That's $67,350,000 per pizza.

December 7, 2017

15969.00 * 10,000 = $159,690,000
That's $79,845,000 per pizza
I'm pretty sure this is going to be compared to the Tulip bubble of 1634 pretty soon.

Ale Kipman -- Microsoft Hololens

You won't need other screen based gadgetry.

Microsoft won't squander its early advantage.

Near eye displays, and tiny projectors for sharing is where we're going.

MSpowerUser
Business Insider

"The potential of these devices," he said, is that they could one day "replace your phones, TVs, and all these screens." Once your apps, videos, information, and even social life are projected into your line of sight, you won't need any other screen-based gadgetry. Kipman calls it the "natural conclusion" of mixed reality.

That's a leap forward on par with the advent of internet, which changed how people communicated and did business; the smartphone didn't really do anything new, it just put the internet in your pocket, he says.

Google, Facebook, Apple, and Google-backed startup Magic Leap are all working around the clock trying to conquer the mixed reality future for themselves.

But Microsoft, after missing the boat on the mobile market, is now in the enviable position of being one of the leading players in the nascent mixed reality market, thanks to its HoloLens headset.

And Kipman is determined not to squander that early advantage.

Magic Leap Picture

This picture.....

1) they have a heat problem
2) they have a size problem
3) Microsoft is WAY ahead of them
4) we still don't know what they're using for a display.

Still interesting... looks like we'll get more from them soon.

This early prototype was described to Business Insider as "PEQ0" and "the real wearable." PEQ is a term that Magic Leap uses to describe its current prototype. The photo is what the device looked like as of early January, and the source said there have been improvements to the prototype since then.
The board will see a carefully planned demo of the "PEQ" by CEO Rony Abovitz next week, using equipment that looks more finished, with belt packs instead of a backpack, the person said.
