Recent Presentation and the Upside.

1st Things first. Whatever you buy or sell is on you. 

I know this is read by other people, but it started as a place for me to keep my notes and not lose them -- and that's largely what it still is, and I haven't been keeping as up on things as I used to.

Posts are rare now, largely because there are a lot more eyes on Microvision than there used to be and you can see a lot of discussion, references and new information on the r/mvis reddit board... 


  • The most valuable part of MicroVision is the Near Eye display. 
    • As much as the focus of the investing public is on LiDAR, don't forget this.
    •  it's big enough that I think that LiDAR could serve its primary function as a distraction.
    • Apple / Barrons -- AR device 4th Quarter 2022. (Ming-Chi Kuo rarely gets things wrong.)
      • "Apple will launch an augmented-reality headset in the fourth quarter of 2022, and could sell more than a billion of the new devices over the next 10 years, one analyst asserted in a research note Friday."
    • Replace All Screens?
  • Given 4th Quarter 2022, Near Eye Display is likely to have a breakthrough very soon.
    • Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and other players are ALL working on Augmented Reality technology and content.
    • MicroVision has BEST near eye display solution in the world. 
    • The Near Eye Display could be sold as a whole at any time
    • Some other arrangement involving Near Eye Display could show up. (and value based on subscriptions -- would be most profitable for us. (Look at the Beats post, and the Microvision presentation to see that.)
  • Companies desperate for AR.... will be REALLY good for Microvision Stockholders       
  • The number of subscriptions that can be sold with AR devices is ENORMOUS. If we have the value proposition for near eye display changing to emulate the way the value proposition has just been modified for LiDAR as illustrated in the recent Microvision LiDAR presentation.... then.... we will do really well.


  • Microsoft has gotten HUGE increases in productivity with Hololens, and AR Games... will be gigantic.

I believe they are quiet about the near eye display on purpose and for strategic reasons.. (NDA, deal underway.... negotiating tactic.... )

As Snow tells me... the elephant in the room named Ned...

Regarding the presentation.....


The presentation was about LiDAR, and a new way to monetize it. That's a pretty good reason that they talked only about LiDAR.

  • The Microvision presentation changed no timelines...
  • The Presentation described a means of increasing revenue with LiDAR

Whats the difference between Niantic and IVAS?

What's 1,000,000,000 / 120,000?

According to my calculations the Niantic heads up we got last week is 8,333 times better than the IVAS news.

There have been more than a billion downloads of Pokemon Go, and the IVAS go-ahead is for 120,000 units.

Pokemon Go is still going strong -- that's Niantic.

Grayson is pretty on top of things.

Don't get me wrong, the IVAS news is FANTASTIC -- it proves the value, proves it works, proves that it's tough enough to fit Military Standards (Look HERE) The dual news flash... wow. 

But the 120,000 units and the volume from that contract isn't the big news.


Volume of production would be the big news. Niantic is that. (Not yet confirmed, I know, but I'm confident it's right.... whether or not you are confident is up to you.)

Pokemon Go information from Business of APPS 

The game launched in July 2016, and became not just a smash hit game, but a global cultural phenomenon; in the summer of 2016, it seemed as if there was no getting away from Pokémon GO. There was even a Pokémon GO Frappuccino! How many games get a drink named after them at Starbucks? How many games inspire 200,000 Spotify playlists?

If you don't believe in Pokemon, you don't need to. Of course they wouldn't build single-purpose eyewear. You just need to believe in "walking around games" and Niantic is great at it, and so is UNREAL -- who builds their sofware engine for everyone.

You can change the static variables, but the share float doesn't change often, the tax rate is based on Large Tech companies, MicroVision expenditures are a guess -- actually all of this is a guess, but it is a way for you to play with some of the numbers.

Use your own numbers, and remember that buyouts happen with substantially different numbers. Calculating Buyout using EBITDA (To set the buyout number here, I'd guess at increases in sales, average the next five years set expenditures and tax rate to zero, and use 5-15 as the PE. -- remember this is a single vertical.)

Augmented Reality (Mixed Reality) Will be bigger than LiDAR

....as is really popular to say lately, "Do your own Due Diligence... this is only my own opinion. -- which is true."

Mixed reality is going to replace the screen on your smartphone... and your PC screen.

Pay Close attention to this. Microsoft also going consumer.

And... like LiDAR, EVERY MAJOR Tech company is ALSO going full steam ahead into Augmented reality, and MicroVisions NEAR EYE DISPLAY is the best.



Here is the proof that MicroVision is IN Hololens.


It's also here, I started near the spot in the video. If you search that weird abomination prototype, you will see Microvision's logo (3 times?)




How popular will this be as a consumer product? As popular as Pokemon Go in Taiwan (The first mainstream augmented reality game.) 



IF you're on the fence as to when to buy.... the way I see it... now.

But.... But what if Microvision gets so expensive that they won't pay it?

 Ha! -- interesting FUD, but ridiculous.

Recently I suggested 10 Billion for LiDAR and 10 Billion for Near Eye display. 20 Billion.

Let's look at the big tech companies: (Apple, Amazon, Google, Microsoft) They're ALL looking at self-driving cars. They're all looking at Augmented reality. They would all like to be leaders in one or both, and one company has the best specs in both. (MicroVision)

Market Growth

These are some graphics from a post done in 2018.

Not even the most awesome products hit the ground in a frenzy. A recent example is Instantpot : Founded in 2009, started moving in 2014, a frenzy in 2017. (Overnight success! says the media.)


We're sitting on two products that appear to be getting this kind of growth and adoption. LiDAR and Near Eye Display. LiDAR will be everywhere. So will Near Eye Display.

Good charts of adoption are difficult to find. You eventually end up with some kind of distorting compression that changes it in a way that the visual representation is distorted. ( partly because, as you'll see, they're difficult to fit on a screen and be readable at both ends.)

This is of CAMERA Sales.... Sucks to be in cameras? unless you think you just went back to sort of normal from a decade of amazing.




If we add cameras that are included on cellphones, we get a bit of a different picture. The GOLD area is cameras on phones..... except they fade out at the top of the graph.





Well, happily, they put something on there so we could see the top of the graph --- but the screen graphics kind of break down. Well, there you are with cellphones included.

That's how a market can grow.

LiDAR is for more than cars, and Near Eye displays are probably going to replace your cellphone screen in a few years.

The Beats Exercise

Beats sold to Apple for 3.2 Billion. Why?

This was a mysterious acquisition when it happened. Not too difficult to make a new kind of headset, but that was what everyone saw when they purchased it.

Why did Apple buy Beats?


Apple's Beats Acquisition has already paid off
Indeed, Apple Music would launch in June 2015, and amass 10 million subscribers by January 2016 -- 20 million paid users that December. Less than two years later, and after some redesigns, it would double its tally to 40 million. Sure, the company hasn't caught Spotify globally, and it may never be able to. But in the US, Apple reportedly has more paying users than its biggest rival.
The reason for the price wasn't obvious --- but it was there.

It was not for the hardware, but for the number of subscriptions it could sell.

So, you need to ask yourself, how many paying subscriptions could MicroVision's technology enable?

Microsoft office is a subscription.

In the world of AR there will likely be subscription services for education, games, business applications, or additional fees just to have AR service.

Interactive projection(or display only) could improve the appeal media subscriptions significantly.

Can they sell in a few years 20 million subscriptions? There's your 3.8 Billion. ($27/share)



Secret History of Beats
“By 2013, Beats Electronics was a distressed business by any standard,” said the late PrivCo chief Sam Hamadeh. “The company was in a corner until Carlyle stepped in.” 

The Carlyle investment also gave Beats the funds it needed to keep expanding. That was especially important given the focus on its new streaming service. Beats Music celebrated its official launch in January 2014 with a concert at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles, fronted by Dre, Diddy, Eminem, Nas, and Ice Cube. Inside, superstars from Drake to Pink mingled with label chiefs and talent agency executives at the oversubscribed show.

There were no reports of Apple executives in the crowd, but the computer giant was clearly watching. On May 8, the Financial Times reported that Apple had agreed to purchase Beats for $3.2 billion; that night, the grainy YouTube video of Dr. Dre’s impromptu celebration lit up the Internet.

three weeks later, though, the deal went through—for a final price of $3 billion. “No traditional valuation measure applied to Beats as a business justifies the price,”
It seems pretty clear to me that it was purchased for getting subscriptions to increase. If it already paid off for the increase from doubling the number of paid users from 20 million to 40 million --- you have to ask yourself can the results from MicroVision's Near Eye Display OR their Interactive Display result in 20 million paid subscriptions? (I believe the answer is clearly yes it can -- significantly more than that.) so those 20 million paid subscribers are worth

The Market doesn't Know All.


The Near Eye display for Hololens....

Microsoft lied about who invented this. They hired some of MicroVision's engineers and added their own adjustments, but MicroVision invented it.

There is no other way to accurately describe this. (I make the case for that here.)
 
Microsoft is welcome to rebut this and I'll happily post it.

There is a reason that they would lie about it: That is that the value of it is extraordinary and they WANT to get credit for it.

In their own words they built Hololens AROUND the display.

I do not think that it was to save money on purchasing the company. The current market cap of the company is pocket change for a company the size of Microsoft. I'm pretty sure they want credit.

The shareholders who diligently researched this did it right. They should have been rewarded for their diligence in figuring this out back in February of 2019 (MicroVision Reddit Board)

If they think they can buy MicroVision on the cheap they'll get a no-votes from me.

There are a number of other companies eager to get into Augmented Reality, and this display is going to enable it in many places. There is no other AR display that is even close.

I saw Meta right before I saw MicroVision's Nomad. Nomad was MUCH better than Meta at the time, and was 20 years older.



Demand the VALUE of this from whoever buys this company.... it's very high.

If you had been following closely you would have had near proof of Microvision in Hololens last October.  The picture for the video above, on the right, you can see Microvision's logo several times.


Check out the beginning of Microsoft's Announcement of Hololens 2. If you were really following Microvision at this point, Feb of 2019, you SAW Microvision's tech at this point, but Microsoft claimed it.

Apple AR Glasses

Microsoft has made great strides in AR to be sure. I think it is is going to be a tool that improves things in astonishing ways. It will also be an amazing new toy.

But, given the way Microsoft has treated Microvision. I'm holding out for the Apple AR glasses. I'm quite confident it will use the same display.

They built this device around Microvision's display and they NEED it to produce this device.

If my read on the timing is correct this is the APRIL 2017 Contract, which also states that Microvision can sell it to whomever they want after the end of development.


I expect that when the company is sold, this will be included in any buyer's abilities as well. 


Any startup who had developed a similar display, with a similar contract would have a market cap in multiple billions of dollars -- and Microvision is NOT a one-trick pony. (My opinion.... do your own due diligence, and your own homework.)

Let the bidding begin.

Microsoft Acquiring Microvision?

The Rumor mill has been very active lately, I'll hold onto my doubts about any announcement of an acquisition today, but there may be an a confirmation that the tech is used by Microsoft in Hololens.

If you've been following closely for the last year, there is little doubt that Microvision's near-eye display is the display for hololens.

MicroVision is a leader in ultra-miniature sensing and projection solution based on the laser beam scanning methodology. MicroVision has a substantial portfolio of patents relating to laser beam scanning projection and sensing. For example, MicroVision’s MEMS engine can be found inside Microsoft Hololens 2.

Today, Florida Independent reported that Microsoft is acquiring MicroVision and the news may be officially announced on May 12th. More than the current product portfolio, MicroVision’s IP will be a great asset for Microsoft. Also, MicroVision is already in talks with several car manufacturers for providing sensor technologies for autonomous vehicles. MicroVision’s relationship with car manufacturers may also help Microsoft to push its Azure cloud in the automotive industry.

Just Tried Hololens 2

It's awesome.

Sorry the report is late, family came first for the last few days.

So, Saturday morning, 20 minutes after the  exhibit opened, I was at the museum.

Luckily, when they asked if I had an appointment and did not, there was one available in 20 minutes.

In the room there were some chairs to wait, and this amazing model of Mont-Saint-Michel. The model was interesting, but I was more interested in HL2.


This is a Mont-Saint-Michel exhibit, not a Hololens exhibit -- as you can see from the link to the exhibit page. People were using the Hololens, but were intently focused on the display and what it offered. (Which is exactly as it should be. It was seamless.) 70 & 80 year old people (or so they seemed) were using it without any fuss -- completely seamless and instinctive to use it.


I sat down as they fitted HL2 to my head. The host staff here didn't have long experience with the HL2 (One that I talked to had tried HL1.) It is MUCH more comfortable than HL1. I wear glasses, and with glasses on, I can take about 20 minutes with HL1 before it becomes very uncomfortable. I would easily be able to wear HL2 for most of the day and enjoy it. 

There was little interactivity with the exhibit. You looked at the model, it gave instructions: when the ball moves around, focus on the ball with your eyes, and it will continue. Easy enough. 

The first thing it did then was add moving surroundings to the model... instead of just looking at the model, you were looking at the model with waves and water surrounding it. (Cool!) It was clearly scanning the model because when I moved around it would only put the waves where they belonged, around the outside of the model castle. 

I followed the ball, it added and subtracted from the model, superimposing graphics over the physical thing in front of me. If I changed my position, it would compensate, and I could effectively walk around the model and see the changes from whichever position I had. 

At one point the ball launched upwards, and I scanned around looking for it... then I was IN the cathedral. The room was maybe 20 by 30 feet, but I could see the other end of the cathedral 150 feet away. In any direction I looked, there was what I would see, and it changed as I moved. (I was tempted to see if I could walk all the way to the other end, but decided they wouldn't appreciate it.)
At another point, there was another completely computer generated model floating in the room. I could walk around that one too and see if from different angles. 

One of the more interesting uses of the Hololens was it showed the INSIDE of the model. Here's how they used this part of the structure -- that and it showed pop-up illustrations, and narrated... you could hear it perfectly, but you couldn't hear the sounds from other headsets (I think there were 5 in use at a time.) 

This wasn't the HL2 demonstration I was hoping for however. This presentation was designed on Hololens 1 and seemed like the display hadn't changed from HL1. I looked around the outside of the display, and it seemed like there was some display "acreage" that was unused. I was puzzled by this, but I strongly suspect what happened is that they took the presentation that was designed on HL1, and transferred it directly to HL2 -- with the same display dimensions and the same resolution that they were using on HL1.

I’m in Redmond, Washington, in a room at Microsoft, pondering an all-terrain vehicle that has a busted engine. I have no idea how to fix it. I’ve never done engine repair before.


But I do have some help: On my head, I’m wearing the HoloLens 2, Microsoft’s “augmented reality” device. It has a see-through visor, almost like the one on a motorcycle helmet, and the HoloLens projects images onto the visor so they appear to float in the air before you.

When I look at the vehicle, the HoloLens flickers to life, and a guide to fixing the engine pops up in the air. A blue arrow points at a tableful of tools, and when I walk over to it, the arrow indicates that I should grab a torque wrench. Once I take that tool, a new arrow appears, beckoning me across the room to a case of bolts. I grab a bolt, and a third arrow shows me where on the engine to install and tighten it. In under two minutes I’ve completed the repair.

The sensation is bizarre, like living in a world of Harry Potter magic. I can even touch the holograms. While I’m doing another repair job, a virtual screen with the face of a remote mechanic materializes before me to talk me through the job. The screen is in my way, though—so I grab it by the corner with my fingers, right there in the air, and drag it off to the side.

Trimble announced the availability of the Trimble XR10 with HoloLens 2 system, a worksite-ready mixed-reality solution that enables workers to visualize 3D data on project sites for more efficient planning, collaboration and reporting.

Connecting Conference Call Dots...

Our activities related to our Interactive Display solutions resulted in a major step forward during the past few months as customer due diligence work has now led to negotiations for a component purchase agreement that we aim to complete this quarter* for a targeted launch of our Interactive Display module in 2020. 
"...we aim to complete" seems to imply that terms have been agreed to and the ball is in MicroVision's court with the contract sitting on PM's desk waiting for him to sign and reveal at an opportune moment. I believe that he has learned his lesson of prematurely announcing expectations from the delay caused by Tier-1s requesting the switch to Class 1 laser light engines.
"These engagements over the past few quarters continue to reinforce our belief that MicroVision has the potential with our Interactive Display product to sell 1 to 3 million units during the first 12 to 24 months of production.
If 3 million units = $100 million in revenue, then we can estimate our expected revenue to be in the area of $33 per unit.
We believe that this capability expands the potential market for our Interactive Display products to include personal mobile gaming devices. With a larger potential market, we believe that we have increased the opportunity for our Interactive Display product to sell well in excess of 10 million units to multiple customers.
So 10 million additional Interactive Display units sold for mobile gaming should lead to revenues of about $330 million with margins increasing due to economies of scale! 
I believe that the TAM will be much greater, but let us err on the conservative side.
I think that is pretty exciting!

Leveraging our years of Laser Beam Scanning experience and our demonstrated capabilities in LiDAR, the Automotive LiDAR vertical is a natural fit for MicroVision. That said, we needed to develop critical additional capabilities to meet some of the performance requirements in this space. With new IP for these innovations recently filed we believe we have the right solution at the right time. Early in 2019 we engaged several top tier Automotive OEMs and presented an outline of our first product to market. This product would be intended to support up to ADAS Level 3 autonomy.
So MicroVision has been working on this vertical for some time in silence and has filed for patents on new IP, and in early 2019 engaged with several top tier Automotive OEMs. Sounds like NRE opportunities exist along the lines of the April 2017 contract with Microsoft and revenues from this could result. Now which Automotive OEMs were heavily committing to Microsoft HoloLens2? Toyota was one, IIRC.
So we could be looking at MicroVision revenues over $400 million, not counting HoloLens2 and other AR/MR contributions or Display Only or Consumer LiDAR, in the next few years from a public company selling for $0.75 per share currently. 
And now it's all public information if you know how to read between the lines.

Conference Call

I've been gone a lot and extremely focused on some training. Arrived home yesterday just as the conference call was getting started.

This company will be the source of key components in multiple emerging technologies.

I said "I told you you'd hear numbers like that eventually." a number of times yesterday.

Most of the delay is probably from trade adjustments with China. Short term disruptive, long term, this should be a very positive development.

Is one of the all time best lines in any conference call ever.

Production unit shipments for our April 2017 contract customer began in the third quarter and continue to proceed smoothly, meeting our customers production schedule. Our activities related to our Interactive Display solutions resulted in a major step forward during the past few months as customer due diligence work has now led to negotiations for component purchase agreement that we aim to complete this quarter fora targeted launch of our interactive display module in 2020.

As customer products come to market, we expect our company revenues could reach $100 million over a 12-month period, following product
launches that we expect to start in the second half of 2020Let's move on to our automotive LiDAR product. The markets for advanced driver assistance systems is experiencing high growth that we expect to accelerate with the need for safety features and new regulations targeted to come into effect in the next 3 to 4 years.

Yes. That's helpful. I didn't realize if this was specifically for Interactive Display only. So that's helpful.And then if I could just ask 1 more question. Just recently, Alex Kipman, who has been really the guru behind the HoloLens 2 did this whole presentation about a month ago, talking about the HoloLens 2 and in that he showed a slide actually of the prototype of the device and its clearly seen on their the MicroVision logo on the PCB Board. So I'm just kind of curious, is that sort of a public validation that you're on the HoloLens 2?
 And I would love to get a little bit of comments, specifically, tied to that presentation that Alex gave?

That's right. In fact, it was titled the HoloLens 2 - Unpacked.

And in that picture, it looks like you can see the MicroVisionlogo on some of those components. We can confirm that it appears to be our logo. And beyond that, I can't make any other comment.
