Microsoft acquires laser sensing company MicroVision to deepen vehicle technology layout

MicroVision's platform approach means that its technology can be widely used.
  All along, Microsoft has been looking for ways to enter the automotive technology market . In September 2019, Microsoft announced the Connected Car Platform (MCVP). The platform is said to be an evolving system that auto companies can use to implement multiple services in their vehicles , including in-car experience, autonomous driving, advanced navigation, user interaction and insight, telematics and prediction services, and Connect and OTA.
  In the 2019 MCVP white paper , Microsoft shared its connected car vision, "MCVP provides a consistent technical infrastructure and integrates vehicle configuration and solutions into a common data source through secure and scalable data ingestion. the platform, automotive manufacturers and partners can use the vehicle telemetry , create customized, innovative, for the consumer 's appreciation of the vehicle and cloud services, including telemetry, navigation, goods and services , etc. in addition, MCVP not only for the ride Used cars can also be applied to commercial and industrial vehicles, including cars, trucks, cranes, ships and drones. "

If you had been following closely you would have had near proof of Microvision in Hololens last October.  The picture for the video above, on the right, you can see Microvision's logo several times.


Check out the beginning of Microsoft's Announcement of Hololens 2. If you were really following Microvision at this point, Feb of 2019, you SAW Microvision's tech at this point, but Microsoft claimed it.

Apple AR Glasses

Microsoft has made great strides in AR to be sure. I think it is is going to be a tool that improves things in astonishing ways. It will also be an amazing new toy.

But, given the way Microsoft has treated Microvision. I'm holding out for the Apple AR glasses. I'm quite confident it will use the same display.

They built this device around Microvision's display and they NEED it to produce this device.

If my read on the timing is correct this is the APRIL 2017 Contract, which also states that Microvision can sell it to whomever they want after the end of development.


I expect that when the company is sold, this will be included in any buyer's abilities as well. 


Any startup who had developed a similar display, with a similar contract would have a market cap in multiple billions of dollars -- and Microvision is NOT a one-trick pony. (My opinion.... do your own due diligence, and your own homework.)

Microsoft Acquiring Microvision?

The Rumor mill has been very active lately, I'll hold onto my doubts about any announcement of an acquisition today, but there may be an a confirmation that the tech is used by Microsoft in Hololens.

If you've been following closely for the last year, there is little doubt that Microvision's near-eye display is the display for hololens.

MicroVision is a leader in ultra-miniature sensing and projection solution based on the laser beam scanning methodology. MicroVision has a substantial portfolio of patents relating to laser beam scanning projection and sensing. For example, MicroVision’s MEMS engine can be found inside Microsoft Hololens 2.

Today, Florida Independent reported that Microsoft is acquiring MicroVision and the news may be officially announced on May 12th. More than the current product portfolio, MicroVision’s IP will be a great asset for Microsoft. Also, MicroVision is already in talks with several car manufacturers for providing sensor technologies for autonomous vehicles. MicroVision’s relationship with car manufacturers may also help Microsoft to push its Azure cloud in the automotive industry.

Okay Okay..

1st things first.

This blog isn't and never has been intended to be investment advice. Whatever you read here is my own opinion, that's all -- whatever you do with my opinion is your business, not mine.



A lot of people have been e-mailing, texting, calling, etc. asking for my opinion about what is going on with Microvision.

I really don't know much new, the company has been really quiet -- everyone else is experiencing that too. If there is something interesting, it usually pops up on the Reddit board before I have seen it. 


About the most recent news:

I am certain that a significant part of the recent weakness in the stock is the result of Corona Virus fears that are affecting the entire rest of the market. Both the market itself AND the supply chain. People are selling everything, and supply chains have been disrupted. There isn't any reason we should feel unique. (If the S&P 500 is down 25% what do you expect from us?)

I have always expected we would get to a licensing only model. (And hoped for it actually.)

Microvision's LiDAR solution is worth a lot of money. Autonomous vehicles are coming. (First to densely populated urban areas, then beyond.) ADAS is going to be required. Good sensors are required for this and Microvision's is excellent.

Same with the Near Eye Display. (AR is up and coming, and it's going to be HUGE.) It also will not happen tomorrow, but will be a steadily growing market. I believe that Hololens has the "Killer AP" for AR, and that it will not be difficult to get significant consumer involvement in AR. (Look at the initial craziness and persistent popularity of Pokemon' Go) I am convinced that Microvision is involved in Hololens, for all the reasons that have been highlighted here before. There is a long thread on the Reddit Board, tracking many patents that point that way.

Same with Interactive display: The use case for it is excellent. Based on numerous data points that include an interaction with an engineer from the company, I am convinced that Amazon was one of the customers for this product. It's entirely possible that the delay with this was simply supply chain problems. If Apple has trouble with supply chains, everyone will have problems.

Same with Display only. A few years ago in the Microvision Suite at CES I saw an "Android TV" with Microvision projector. I find it difficult to believe that a projector with an incorporated tuner (or incorporated Netflix) wouldn't be a hit... here, yes, but especially in second and third world countries where power and space are difficult to come by. There are a few billion people in the world living in small spaces who would still like to watch content on a big screen.

On the new CEO:

He owns a lot of stock, so he's motivated to make it work.

Maybe he's got something. Maybe he doesn't.

I am not selling.... now, back to flying and other things.

NDAs and a loose-lipped Microsoft Engineer.

... AKA Snowboard sent this to me the other day after a phone conversation.

To learn a little more behind the scenes about how the iPad came to be, you could check out Walter Isaacson's biography titled 'Steve Jobs' at a library if you don't own it. I'll recount just one tiny fragment from the book about the birth of the decision to create the iPad. On Page 467 the book recounts:
"One of the engineers developing a tablet PC at Microsoft was married to a friend of Laurene [the wife of Steve Jobs] and Steve Jobs, and for his fiftieth birthday he wanted to have a dinner party that included them along with Bill and Melinda Gates. Jobs went,  a bit reluctantly. 'Steve was actually quite friendly to me at the dinner,' Gates recalls, but he 'wasn't particularly friendly' to the birthday guy.
Gates was annoyed that the guy kept revealing information about the tablet PC he had developed at Microsoft. 'He's our employee and he's revealing our intellectual property,' Gates recounted. Jobs was also annoyed, and it had just the consequence that Gates feared.
As Jobs recalled: 'The guy badgered me about how Microsoft was to to completely change the world with this tablet PC software and eliminate all notebook computers, and Apple out to license his Microsoft software. But he was doing the device all wrong. It had a stylus. As soon as you have a stylus, your dead. This dinner was like the tenth time he talked to me about it and I was so sick of it that I came home and said, 'Fuck this, let's show him what a tablet can really be.'

An Owed Post

When I started this blog it was literally simply a place for me to keep my own research so I wouldn't lose it.

Recently, I have been much less active here... that has been part of my plan. The kids are grown, and I love flying and want to do a lot more of that. That's been my recent focus.

I've been getting e-mails and texts querying why I haven't been active here.. is everything okay, etc.

The answer is, I don't perceive that anything has changed. And yes, things are okay. I'm frustrated too that we haven't had more news.

Researching MVIS, and posting here has gone from a #2 priority, to about #4, and at the moment, I'm in waiting mode -- as are most. I see new iterations of what we already know, if I see something notable that's new it will get attention.

  • I strongly suspect that Amazon is the primary Interactive Display customer (and I have previously stated why -- up to and including a strong reaction from an Amazon engineer who was working on new iterations of Alexa.) This also can be sold elsewhere, and not everything that is Alexa enabled is directly from Amazon.
  • I suspect Microsoft and Hololens. We know that they can sell this technology to any customer. The market for this should be vast. Remember that most of the machines that use Windows are NOT made by Microsoft, and in Augmented Reality this will probably be the case as well. (Do not forget that Microsoft and Microvision have never acknowledged the connection -- this connection was entirely derived by a lot of research by a lot of different people, here and elsewhere.)
  • I still think that the Display Only customer is still in play or they would be trying to sell display-only products elsewhere.

Even in a worst-case scenario, I see considerably more value than we're currently showing.

Figure I owed a post after that hit-piece on SA this morning. (Interesting coincidence with several days of painting the tape after market.)
