MEMS Laser Scanning: Platform for Next Generation 3D Depth Sensors

MicroVision’s MEMS Laser Beam Scanning (LBS) technology is a leading display technology for pico projection, heads-up-display, and augmented reality eyewear applications. The same flexible technology can also be applied to exciting new sensing applications, such as 3D depth sensing. Demand for small and low cost 3D depth sensing solutions is growing rapidly driven by increasing demand for new approaches for Natural User Interface, Machine Vision, Robotic Navigation, Metrology, and Advanced Driver Assistance System. The next generation of automotive head-up displays will offer HD resolution, and it will catapult the information projected to the windscreen into the area of augmented reality. For such data-rich, high-resolution displays, a new generation of laser sources along with the associated electronic environment will be needed. Intersil is now introducing a laser diode driver IC dedicated to such applications. Despite the high current it can switch, the ISL78365 has a very small footprint.
To project HD color images to the windscreen, the ISL78365 is pulsing four high-power laser sources with up to 750 mA, almost twice as high as competing solutions. The high current and fast switching speed of the new Intersil IC enable head-up displays (HUDs) with high resolution, color intensity and, certainly the most important of all, high frame rate.

Intel Acquires Itseez Facebook acquires TwoBigEars

There is a lot of tech money out there chasing opportunities.

As stockholders in MicroVision, that's great for us -- unless we accept too little for our shares.


Itseez based in San Francisco was founded in 2005 to make computer vision algorithms and software. Along with that, it also includes a suite of algorithms for automobiles called “advanced driver assistance systems.” This unique feature allows car hardware to recognize pedestrians and traffic signs and can help in detecting when a car drifts from its lane.
Apart from the automotive field, Itseez has also developed algorithms for robotics, surveillance, smartphones and sports analytics. Last month, Intel also announced the purchase of Yogitech, another IoT company. Other than this in 2015, it also brought Lantiq, which is known for making chips for smartphones.
Around 40% of Intel total revenue is generated through the data center and IoT Business. IoT has already helped Intel to survive in the time when PC market is seeing a decline in its popularity among the consumers and has contributed about $2.2 billion in revenue growth last year.
Now Itseez is incubating its next products: itSeez3D – a breakthrough consumer 3D scanning solution, a suite of ADAS algorithms and an embedded face solution Facense.

Facebook Acquires TwoBigEars

Facebook has acquired a spatial audio technology company named Two Big Ears for an undisclosed amount. In a statement, the company said, “Our mission is to make VR audio succeed across all devices and platforms and continue to help creators make the best experiences for billions of people across the world.” Two Big Ears stated that support for its paid licenses will be wound down in the next 12 months.

Foxconn offers 10X for SMART technologies



Foxconn Technology Group has acquired Smart Technologies for a cash payment of $4.50 per Common Share, a deal which comes less than two months after Foxconn’s much publicised acquisition of Sharp.

“We are very excited by the proposed acquisition of Smart by Foxconn, who is the world’s largest electronics manufacturer,” said Neil Gaydon, president and CEO of Smart. “Smart has built an enviable global brand in both the education and enterprise spaces. The proposed transaction with Foxconn provides us with one of the strongest global electronics partners with access to significant resources, a broad range of new technologies, markets and financial resources that will enable us to accelerate our strategy and position Smart for significant future growth.”

The deal is subject to customary conditions for a transaction of this nature, which include court and regulatory approvals and the approval of 66 2/3% of the votes cast by Smart shareholders represented in person or by proxy at a meeting of Smart shareholders to be called to consider the agreement.

One of the MotoMods seems easy enough to work out: it's a camera grip that appears to have its own sensor, lens, and flash. The other two are a little less obvious in function, but VentureBeat has reported that the MotoMods line will include cases with better speakers and a pico projector, and another leaked list suggests names for the range including "adventure," "theater," "stereo," "power," "style," and "pro camera."
Lenovo is likely to reveal the Moto Z at its Tech World conference in San Francisco on June 9th.

Originally announced at CES in January, the minuscule HopperGo is a 64GB USB drive with a built in wireless access point. The little device connects to your Dish Hopper 3 or Hopper 2 – essentially Dish’s DVR – and sucks down up to 100 hours of TV. You can then unplug the little bugger and watch for four hours on one charge through the Dish Anywhere app.

When I first pulled this little thing out of the box I thought they had sent the wrong thing. It is truly tiny – about as big as an Altoids tin if not smaller. There isn’t much in the way of an interface on the box, just a button to turn it on and a USB port. The real magic happens on the Hopper and in the Dish Anywhere app. To move video to the box you simply select the content and transfer it to the HopperGo. Then, when you are connected to the HopperGo via private wifi, you can watch up to 100 hours of TV.

Screen color compensation -- a feature that's ready?

What I think was mentioned in the Full Pu article.

Saw this a long time ago, and was thinking that actually using it in a portable projector would be a feature that we'd have to wait a long time for.

The language in the Full-Pu article (previous post) makes me think they're working on implementing this technology NOW. 

This could make portable laser projectors additionally awesome combine this with keystone correction and infinite focus, and we have some serious magic.

The original reference I had saved had a projector shining on a book case -- with many books of different colors and sizes - and the projection on it made the books disappear -- which is about what they're doing in the first sample where the stone wall is going away.

The Annual Stockholder's meeting is coming up next week.

I can't get a definitive list of what will be present for demos, but I do expect that most of what was available at CES will be available at this meeting.

Seeing pictures of the Qualper phone is one thing -- holding it in your hand and watching it work is quite something else -- what I saw wasn't a poorly made prototype.

Of course I could be wrong about any of these being present -- I can't get a definitive list... but when you see this... it's very impressive.

Microsoft Sells Nokia to Foxconn

Microsoft's future in the mobile phone business is now entirely dependent on its Lumia smartphone range after the software giant confirmed on Wednesday that it was selling the feature phone part of the business to a subsidiary of Foxconn and HMD Global, a Finnish company, in a deal worth $350 million — including the rights to use the Nokia brand on future feature phone devices.

The deal involves all of Microsoft's feature phone assets, which were purchased from Nokia as part of a $7.1 billion deal that is now seen as a major mistake. Those assets include brands, software and services, care network and other assets, customer contracts, and critical supply agreements.
The Microsoft deal is expected to close in the second half of 2016, the company said in a statement. Foxconn, also trading as Hon Hai Precision, is the world's largest electronics contract manufacturer and is headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan. It produces some of the world's most popular consumer electronics, including the iPhone and iPad, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Surface tablets.
