Linked In, Brexit and Microvision

That may be the conventional wisdom, but recent events prove that the conventional wisdom is often wrong.

The Graph just below shows the probability of a "stay" vote over time. All the talking heads on television said "of course they'll vote to stay" people weren't even concerned about Britain leaving the EU. From BullionVault



What happened? What everyone knew for sure because of polling and "markets" turned out to be wrong. Yes, that's a better than 80% chance of "Stay" to 100% go when the vote was in.

Oh, and then there's the "you can't keep that quiet" camp. Everyone will squeal and the results will show up in the stock price before we get there. 

When it's really important, corporate secrecy can be incredibly powerful. The moves aren't telegraphed in the stock.

So, back in February, someone was pretty quiet about something, because they came out with news that cut the stock almost in half. Then earlier this month people who knew stuff were pretty quiet, because the stock then nearly doubled over night.

No matter what you may think of Microvision stock right now -- I know it's frustrating because I'm in it too -- they are purveyors of a cutting-edge technology, that is going to enable screens everywhere, and everyone wants portable, and everyone likes big screens -- and those things are incompatible unless you're using Microvision's tech. 

So, the stock is down right now. As the company is reporting an end to production troubles and new products are on the way --- and smartphone producers are calling the color blue a cool new feature.

It's going to be fantastic. Every bit of real and imagined and potential bad news is priced into the stock -- but the good news is not.

After reading it (quickly, I may have missed something) I think he's going to be REALLY excited about PicoP.

It was previously mentioned on the Yahoo message board, and a reader contacted me about it. I had missed this as wasn't able to find the link in the time I had. 

It's very easy to make a website and pretend a lot of things -- I'm still not sure that Qualper isn't a smokescreen for another large OEM. 

But some of what is here is very compelling -- I've pulled the whole article because I'm not so sure that the link will remain or be stable.

I did receive an e-mailed correction to this. That the translation from Google is incorrect... the number. That twenty million was incorrectly translated from 200,000.

If this is designed only for the Chinese market, why is the laser warning on the back written only in English? 

It's like Elwood's apartment. You've seen it so often, you won't even notice it.

It sure does look a lot like an iPhone! Doesn't it?

The images were pulled from the site because of doubts about the stability of the link.


Ronald Wayne

A tribute to a great investor, Ronald Wayne.
Everybody knows who Steve Jobs is. If you follow technology or the stock market, you probably know who Steve Wozniak is.
Do you have any idea who Ronald Wayne is?
In April 1976, Wayne was the third co-founder and 10 percent shareholder of Apple Computer. For reasons that are both interesting and relevant to today’s discussion, he sold his stake for a mere $800. Had he held onto to it, that 10 percent stake would today be worth $62.93 billion of Apple stock. 
I’ll let that seep into your brain for a minute . . . $800 into $63 billion.
This may possibly be the worst stock trade — ever.
There are lessons for all of us in this. Before we get to those, a brief digression.
Apple was born 40 years ago, on April Fools’ Day 1976. The story of Jobs, the marketing genius/visionary, and Wozniak, the brilliant engineer/hacker, toiling away in a garage is well-known Silicon Valley lore. But less well-known history is that of Wayne, the third partner, who was there from day one.
His contributions were not insignificant: He designed the company’s logo, wrote the Apple 1 computer user’s manual and drafted the company’s original partnership agreement. But after less than two weeks with Apple, he had had enough, and on April 12, Wayne sold his stake for $800. In Wozniak’s autobiography (“iWoz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It”), he described Wayne’s contribution: “Ron ended up playing a huge role in those very early days at Apple.”

5G Sooner than expected

This is way sooner than I expected for 5G -- 5G protocol will change the world as far as streaming portable video --- it will be fast enough and cheap enough that there will be nothing in the way.

MediaTek is looking to debut the first generation of its 5G chip solutions as early as 2018. The Taiwan-based IC design house has expanded an R&D team engaged in the development of 5G solutions to more than 100 people, according to sources familiar with the matter.
In addition, MediaTek is working closely with Europe- and Japan-based mobile operators such as NTT DoCoMo to jointly develop and conduct trials of their 5G wireless technologies, the sources said.
Earlier in 2016, MediaTek and NTT DoCoMo have jointly announced their partnership for 5G technology development and trials.
Rival Spreadtrum Communications is also looking to launch experimental 5G chips in 2018, according to industry sources. Spreadtrum is expected to partner with major China-based mobile operators to develop and conduct trials of 5G technology as China aims to improve its self-sufficiency in the semiconductor space.
The general consensus is that 5G networks will be commercialized in 2020.

Today Valve Corp. (Bellevue, Wash.) has a VR headset that is "10 generations ahead anything available today", according to McCauley, by using more accurate head tracking by replacing the camera Oculus uses with a rotating motor driven line-laser. The line laser is essentially a gigantic laser housing a motor spinning a curved mirror mounted on the wall across from the user, that scans across head mounted IR detectors to determine how far away the head is by measuring the time between IR sensor intercepts.

At McCauley Labs they will replace the bulky moving laser mechanism, with a MEMS mirror and a line-laser (or alternatively a 2-axis MEMS mirror and a point laser to raster scan in the manner of a one-mirror pico projector) to perform the same kind of head location geometry and calculation as the Valve System, but micro-miniaturized.

The system will also turn off the backlight for imperceptible periods between frames, to prevent the blurring that otherwise contributes to simulator sickness, making the result VR experience as real as reality itself, or so McCauley claims.

Conclusion

The laser scanned-MEMS projection system is better suited for automotive augmented reality HUDs than the alternative DLP or LCD frame-based display systems. It has the lowest thermal heat generation, and when a laser HUD scanned image only has 25% to 30% of its pixels turned on, the DLP and LCD HUD will require 100% of its image pixels driven to generate the same amount of brightness (current) as the laser HUD. DLP and LCD systems throw away light in order to display a black pixel, but with the laser scanned-MEMS projection system, a black pixel is truly black because the laser diode is turned off and is not consuming power or generating thermal heat.

The DLP and LCD optical architectures do not fully turn off a black pixel, so there is some level of leakage due to the display panel’s surface reflectivity. This results in a slight bright spot where the black pixels area should be. During daytime sunlight, this envelope might not be an issue, but at night, it is much more apparent. From a driver safety perspective, it becomes another distraction, and tips the scale in favor of automakers moving to the laser scanned-MEMS projection system for their next generation HUD.
