Sony Event October 9 -- UPDATED

Speculation is that it will be about the Xperia phones, but there are frequent admissions that nobody knows. We don't know either.

UPDATE FROM DIGITAL TRENDS

Sony will hold an event in New York on October 9, where it could launch the latest Xperia smartphones, revealed earlier this year at the IFA show in Berlin. Sony has an extensive range of desirable mobile products for the second half of 2014, and it will be great to see them all come to America. It’ll be even better if they have extensive network support too.

The invitations don’t tell us what the focus of the event will be, but we’re told to “Demand Great,” which is the tagline being used to promote the Xperia line-up in the countries where they’ve already been officially announced. It makes sense the company will continue the trend elsewhere.

Sony has four exciting new mobile devices in its arsenal, and all could be shown on October 9. The Xperia Z3 smartphone is almost guaranteed to be there, because we already know it has been picked up for sale in the U.S. by T-Mobile. It could be joined by its slightly smaller cousin, the Xperia Z3 Compact, although it was absent from T-Mobile’s announcement. There’s a chance, seeing as Sony’s going to the trouble of having an event, both phones could be sold through more than one network too.

The two Z3 smartphones may be joined by the excellent Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, a smaller, lighter, and more powerful update to the Xperia Z2 Tablet. It was one of our favorites from IFA, and we would like to see it get a wide release in America. Finally, there is a strong possibility Sony’s SmartWatch 3 could launch alongside the new smartphones. It’s a distinct improvement over previous Sony wearables, thanks to the introduction of Android Wear as its operating system.

Sony’s October 9 event is scheduled to last for 90 minutes, therefore more than one new product seems likely. However, it won’t have the week’s headlines all to itself.

The day before Sony’s gathering, HTC will also hold a New York event, where new camera hardware is expected.

Sony Sends Out Invites for October 9 Event in New York

Sony, a day after announcing its Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones in India, has now sent another invitation for an event scheduled for October 9 in New York.
The Sony invite image (seen above) shows the date and time along with a text in bold letters written on a wall saying "Demand Great."
We already know that Sony has been promoting its Xperia Z3 models on Twitter with #DemandGreat hashtag, indicating the New York launch most probably the US launch of the Xperia Z3 family - the Xperia Z3 (Review | Pictures), Xperia Z3 Compact(Pictures), and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. While some are expecting a new device to be announced, it seems quite likely that the event is for the Xperia Z3 family.
Adding to the release date speculation, T-Mobile, a US telecom operator, has confirmed that it would start selling the Xperia Z3 in the coming weeks. CNET addedthat Sprint might also sell its own carrier-locked Xperia Z3 handset soon. However, Sony is yet to confirm the aforementioned details.
Sony launched its Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact handset in India on Thursday for Rs. 51,990 and Rs. 44,990 respectively. Both smartphones feature IP65/68 certification, which makes them dust-proof and waterproof. Sony says both smartphones have 4G LTE support for Indian bands.
Both smartphones also feature PS4 Remote Play, which allows users to stream their PS4 games onto the smartphone over the home Wi-Fi network - this functionality will only be rolled out in November. Check out our previous coverage for the detailed specifications of the smartphones can be seen here.
