"The mobile capabilities and assets they bring will advance our transformation,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, in a statement.
As part of the deal, former Nokia president and CEO Stephen Elop, who was once a candidate to become Microsoft's CEO, now will serve as executive vice president of the Microsoft Devices Group.
With the Nokia purchase, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) adds 25,000 employees to its workforce, which previously numbered about 99,000.
