China Scrambles to stem manufacturing exodus as 50 companies leave

I had been curious that this could be an issue. During the ASM trade tensions with China was an issue mentioned and discussed.

This is one possibility of why a 1 quarter delay could be extended.

One of the many things to watch, I see it as a long-term positive, short term disruptive event.

Thanks Mike

TOKYO/SHANGHAI -- China is racing to keep foreign enterprises in-country, dangling special benefits so that the advantages of staying outweigh the heavy tariffs imposed by the U.S.

A year into the trade war with Washington, more than 50 global companies, including Apple and Nintendo, have announced or are considering plans to move production out of China, Nikkei research has found.

And not just foreign companies. Chinese manufacturers, as well as those from the U.S., Japan and Taiwan, are part of the drain, including makers of personal computers, smartphones and other electronics.

Financial Times
Foxconn will start mass production of displays, car electronics and servers for the US market at its new plant in Wisconsin by the end of next year, Mr Liu said, and plans to invest $1.5bn and employ up to 2,000 people by the end of 2020. At the first investor conference Foxconn hosted in its 45-year history, the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and largest assembler of Apple’s iPhone presented a new management structure designed to deal with the exit of Terry Gou, its founder, from day-to-day business as he runs for president of Taiwan.

Chinese Mobile video Viewing Soars

Research from eMarketer has found that China will have more than 435 million mobile video viewers in 2017, the rapid growth driven by what the researcher says is a seemingly insatiable demand for content and services.
The research, based on data from Cheetah Lab, reveals a highly competitive mobile video sector whereby the top provider, Tencent Video, has just a 15.1% share of the market, closely followed by Baidu-owned iQiyi which claims only half a percentage point less. These two are some way ahead of third-placed Youku (6.36%), which is followed by Mango TV (2.41%) and leTV (1.91%).

Cheetah Lab also found that the country’s top video platforms are rapidly shifting their business models away from advertising and toward subscriptions. While subscriptions made up only 3.4% of digital video revenues in 2011, it expects that proportion to rise to nearly a quarter of all video proceeds by the end of 2017.

How to keep production a secret

This is interesting, a little insight into how they keep things secret. (Really amazing they can with so many people involved.)

Sanbot getting attention

We don't have an *official* announcement, but I'll call this Sony's customer for PicoP engine. (I'm also strongly suspicious of Ford -- See "Testing") That this robot is getting more exposure, and growing beyond China is a sign to me that this customer is active.

Sanbot is getting attention lately in the US.

IF you're in a real hurry Fast forward to 3:25

PC Magazine

The Video suggests a LOT of projected displays, and shows it directly used in a classroom.

If you're like many Americans, chances are you've never encountered a Sanbot robot, but there are already more than 60,000 of the diminutive humanoid servants in restaurants, hospitals, shopping malls, and schools across China. Now they're about to invade the US.

Sanbot's maker, the Shenzen-based Qihan Technology Company, is currently in talks with several US companies who are interested in purchasing the robot. It won't say which ones just yet, but based on the trails that other humanoid service robots like Pepper have blazed, you can expect Sanbot to show up in places such as shopping malls and airports. Don't plan on buying one yourself any time soon, though: Qihan doesn't sell robots directly to consumers, not even in China.

Qihan brought Sanbot to San Francisco this week to show off its capabilities. Sorry, her capabilities—like Pepper, this bot is a female. The first thing you notice about Sanbot, which sells for about $10,000, is her impeccable pedigree of components. Sony manufactured the forward-sensing cameras, Sharp supplied the large touchscreen that adorns her torso, IBM Watson powers her artificial intelligence capabilities, and Nuance provides the voice recognition.

From China -- Lack of innovation precipitates Apple's Decline

I scraped this one because it's good, and I don't know about the stability of the source.

Apple's iPhone fever has apparently faded, however, the iPhone 7 announcement remains in the global spotlight. Despite a lot of rumors and leaks surrounding the new phone, expectations are generally low for Apple's next-generation phone, supposedly coming with processor and camera upgrades, new colors and a slightly different exterior style. These improvements suggest Apple has turned from a trendsetter - as it has been known as for years - into a follower of other manufacturers.

Next year will mark the iPhone's 10th anniversary. Over the past year, the global smartphone industry has been stuck in a downturn and only innovation can help revive and save the entire sector. Apple, however, seems to have been absent during the battle of innovation. The company's market capitalization touched $767.2 billion on April 28, 2015 before getting trapped in a downward spiral. Prior to the iPhone 7 launch event, Apple's market capitalization had lost nearly $200 billion from its peak.

In the fiscal quarter ended March 26, Apple reported its first revenue decline in 13 years. In its third fiscal quarter ended June 25, the company took a global hit. In greater China, Apple's revenue dropped 33 percent in the third fiscal quarter from the year before. A revenue fall to such an extent is generally considered a disaster, but luckily Apple still has over $200 billion in cash revenues.

In the global technology arena, it seems that Apple never invested heavily in research and development (R&D), but instead held to the lowest possible R&D investment. The iPhone maker that has focused on the smartphone world, in a stingy way, has for years failed to present any exciting innovations. In fairness, recent advances in the smartphone landscape have all represented a sustaining innovation, in the commercialization of virtual reality jointly pushed by Facebook and Samsung, camera breakthroughs unveiled by Huawei, curved phones from LG, phones outfitted with modular attachments such as speakers that Lenovo is betting on, or some so-called black technology - frameless smartphone display, curved screen, fast charging capability, dual-camera tech, and eye recognition features. But even in these little waves of change, Apple almost always goes missing.

When the iPhone fever cools and Apple's legend fades away, and as consumers embrace a return to reason, Apple should probably brace for a recession in the future. With smartphone users worldwide having just hit 2 billion this year, less than 30 percent of the world population and lower than the global online population of 3.5 billion, the curtain has only just risen on the smartphone era inaugurated by Apple. Smartphones have already become the most convenient and effective tool to enable Internet connection. At this time, we can't forecast who will be the next to stand out as the next huge innovator, but surely without Steve Jobs, it is less likely to be Apple.

Unlike Apple's previous new product events, Chinese consumers staying up all night to be among the first to get information about new phone details was no longer expected prior to the iPhone 7 launch event. The continued cooling of the consumption triggered by Apple's legend may still be good for the industry after all, making way for late-coming innovators to embrace new opportunities as well as open space.

Globally, sales of the iPhone have hit 1 billion, a record that may not be broken for quite some time. Banking on its iOS operating system and App Store that has gathered a galaxy of developers across the globe, and 600-700 million active users, it is unlikely that Apple will follow Nokia's path and tumble quickly. However, there are conspicuous signs that Apple is falling from its pinnacle. The fundamental reason behind the dismantling of the US tech giant's dominance is that with the Internet sweeping across the world, "Innovation is King" remains the supreme principle to achieve success. Thus Apple which rose to fame thanks to innovation may be destined to fade away because of a lack of innovation.

Why The Russian Interest?? Possibilities discussed

Interest from Russia in what is posted here has grown to the point that traffic from Russia is dwarfing the traffic from anywhere else.

So maybe some investors are curious about the tech in Russia.

Not quite sure why that is. One of the suggestions was that Putin is watching me. So, hello Mr. Putin, stop by, I have some good Vodka in the freezer.

Another possibility: Livemap is making some headway.  (which we are nearly certain has been using PicoP)

Another Suggestion. (Reddit) I like this one. Parts of Russia are getting a lot of Chinese immigrants. (If this is the case, I wonder why the same amount of attention isn't coming from China. Perhaps the degree or manner in which the internet is controlled in China is very different.)

ABC News (Much more at the source.)

The Chinese are invading Russia — not with tanks, but with suitcases.
It’s impossible to know the exact level of Chinese migration into the Russian Far East; Russia has not run a census in over a decade. But by all indications, a significant river of people is surging across the border.
The Moscow Carnegie Center, the only organization to launch an independent study, claimed that there were about 250,000 Chinese in Russia in 1997. The Interior Ministry has claimed that there are 2 million. Other estimates place the Chinese population at 5 million.
Regardless, the Federal Migration Service fears a flood. The service has repeatedly warned that the Chinese could become the dominant ethnic group in the Russian Far East in 20 to 30 years. Such an occurrence would require an annual influx of about 250,000 to 300,000 Chinese, less than one-third the rate that Shaikin currently claims.
There are reasons to believe that the flow will hit these levels, with at least tacit help from Beijing. The Russian Far East is becoming China’s safety valve, much like Mexico lets off population pressures with migration into the United States. China has more than 1.2 billion people — more than eight times Russia’s population. Only 7.4 million Russians populate the entire Russian Far East, versus more than 70 million in northeast China. The Russian Far East is comparatively empty, with only 1.3 people per kilometer. China’s Manchurian population has increased 13 percent in a little more than a decade.
Qualper attention or Phone release in Russia? (also from Reddit)
Translation below by Google
This Qualper QU1. As you might guess from the name, is the debut of a smartphone. And there she decided to place the camera in a very unusual place. How did she get there? Note the break in the rim, is in the left side of the upper end. Solid such centimeter two break. There is a built-in projector smartphone. This arrangement made it Qualper move the camera to the right. However, I do not understand why it was impossible to place the projector on the right and left of the camera, where it would look more logical. The projector is the cause and other features Qualper QU1: large thickness (12.8 mm) and weight (237 g). Other features QU1: 5,5 "Full HD-screen, 4000 mAh battery, 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM, an eight chipset with 1.3 GHz (MediaTek MT6753, probably).

iPhone 6 Banned in China -- Too similar to Chinese phone

This is interesting, and probably favorable for Microvision.

One of a number of things to keep our eyes on.

FROM CNBC

Intellectual property regulators in Beijing barred Apple from selling models of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the city, citing strong similarity to an existing Chinese phone.

Apple said it is appealing the ruling.

"IPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as well as iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus and iPhone SE models are all available for sale today in China," Apple said in a statement Friday. "We appealed an administrative order from a regional patent tribunal in Beijing last month and as a result the order has been stayed pending review by the Beijing IP Court."

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier Friday that some stores stopped selling the phones months ago and are switching to newer models. Apple will soon end production of the banned iPhone 6 models, a person familiar with the production plans told the Journal.

For now, all Apple products are for sale in China, sources told CNBC.

The regulator's decision is another speed bump for Apple in its largest market outside of the U.S.,the Journal said. Struggling iPhone sales in the country were a major factor in the tech giant's quarterly declineposted in April, the first in more than a decade.

Why we're Jealous of Chinese Smartphones

Better innovation and faster turnover in China.

Wall Street Journal -- more at the source
Phones are TVs

In China, phones aren’t second-class citizens when it comes to watching shows and movies.

The best stuff is mostly available to stream online. China’s historic challenges with protecting intellectual property have helped the market invent new business models for media. Services like Youku Tudou, iQiyi and Tencent Video convinced many piracy-stricken content owners to join, rather than fight, the demand for online video by making it legitimate and getting paid for it through video advertisements. If you pay, you watch without ads.

Chinese can legally watch recent episodes of “Game of Thrones” free on a video site owned by Tencent, though censors make it considerably less exciting than what Americans see on HBO.

Now China’s online video services are even producing 360-degree virtual reality shows designed for the mobile world. We’re not holding our breath for U.S. TV producers to invest in a VR version of “The Big Bang Theory” anytime soon.

Sharp -- Foxconn 6.2 Billion - Delayed

Wall Street Journal

Bloomberg

Last Minute Delay

"Atsushi Osanai, an associate professor at Waseda Business School, said the Sharp-Foxconn deal plays in favor of Apple, which prefers to buy a component from multiple suppliers for better bargaining power. Apple buys display panels for its iPhones and iPads from LG Display Co., Japan Display Inc. and Sharp. INCJ’s bailout plan had involved merging Sharp’s display business with its rival, Japan Display Inc., according to people familiar with the plan.

“Apple wouldn’t like Sharp and JDI to join forces because keeping as many vendors as possible can give them greater leverage over price and other negotiable conditions,” said Mr. Osanai."

Qualcomm China Deal

Interesting that the biggest player in mobile chips, is doing a deal in China -- and ending up with a new Chinese company name. I'm not sure what it means, but this kind of deal may shed some light about what is going on with Qualper.

AT Motley Fool -- Much more at the source

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), the largest mobile chipmaker in the world, recently formed a new joint venture in China with the Guizhou Province government. The new company, Guizhou Huaxintong Semiconductor Technology, will design, develop, and manufacture chipsets for servers. Qualcomm will provide research support and server chip technology licenses to the joint venture.
The company will launch with an initial investment of 1.85 billion RMB ($280 million), and be 55% owned by the Chinese government, and 45% owned by Qualcomm. In a press release, Qualcomm President Derek Aberle stated that, although Qualcomm had worked with its Chinese partners for more than two decades, the joint venture "represents a significant increase in our collaboration in China."
This move could help ARM Holdings (NASDAQ:ARMH), which provides the chip designs on which Qualcomm's data centers are based, and harm Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), which has faced multiple challenges in the Chinese data-center market. Let's take a closer look at Qualcomm's data-center ambitions, and how it could turn China into the next big battleground for server chip dominance.

Chinese Qualper promo video

This had me laughing while I was watching it. A kind of mixed laughter. I don't know if this is a normal Chinese style for advertising. (Japan had some similar excess) But this is great. Enjoy.

I'm very confident that this is a MicroVision/Sony enabled product, but I am not certain - yet.

Sony Products SO good...

SONY can't keep up with demand for smartphone cameras.

This is GOOD news.

First, our partner has a lot of demand for its products. This tells us that they will keep making money. This is good.

They are also having this difficulty keeping up with demand because their product was so good, at such a good price, it represented a great value for the OEMS and they all demanded more.

I firmly believe we can expect similar quality and demand for SONY projector engines with PicoP technology.

"Sony is having a lot of trouble keeping up with demand for its Exmor IMX214 camera sensor, which is currently the part of choice for Chinese smartphone makers. "

Interesting Comparison of Picoprojector engines

This was published in 2011, so some of the information may be dated, and there have almost certainly been significant improvements in each of the classes. For example, we know that the resolutions have improved since then.

The contrast ratio is very interesting.
